If the joints are worn I'd suggest our rebuilt axles at $249 ea but if you don't mind getting dirty and you just have torn boots you can go that route for about $40 per axle.

Look at them when they are apart. The mechanic was only going to do new boots and grease for $400.
It is not a bad DIY project. My cv joints looked like new after 125k miles and got new grease and boots for $40 a side. Piece of cake job, and stuff YOU should be doing.

I would inspect the metal parts closely... especially the nut that goes into the CV cage. Mine CV joint completely exploded (wheel side) with only 120K mileage. Here is a pic of the what was left of the nut.

That's the inner bearing race, not a nut.

How about this rebuilder's quality craftsmanship..... I really like the part where Tommy regrinds the ball race with precision.

Anyway, Gunar, look for pitting in the race and very blued and/or pitted *****.
