Default Passanger side back lights problem

Hi guys,

When I bought the car, passanger back side marker would not light up with the rest of the lights. I figured it must be the lamp and did not pay much attention, but now the whole side does not light up. Break light still works... This must be a bad connection somewhere or a relay - I just don't think that all of the bulbs could go bad all at once. Any advise on how to fix this? Need step by step instructions as I'm a newbie when it comes to fixing cars and my electrical knowledge stops with what I learned back in school more then a decade ago...

Thank You!

Well there are more then 2 lights there Or do you mean the whole system switches off when 2 bulbs are out?

Did you check the harness plugs? The side marker plugs are cantankerous and the tailight plug could have some corrosion on some of the pins. Take off the tool cover and pull back the carpet and you should be able to find the harnesses and plugs.

I would remove each lens, (markers) remove the bulb and check for power, one at a time.
If you have no power (use a test light) then go to the fuse box and check by touching the top ond bottom of each fuse. If both light up then that fuse is good. It takes about 2 sec per fuse to test.
If all is good, then remove the head lamp switch and see if any of the wires look burnt. then come back here.

check the fuses first,
then the light connections,
then the ground.
the ground point is under the rear edge of the quarterpanel liner a 10 mm bolt hold the wires to the floor of the hatch

ha ha, oh boy, this will scare you.
remove the rug from the passenger floor.
see the wood at the front of pass. feet, remove it.
buy a 12 volt test light and a $40 meter.

you can make a test bulb with 2 alligator clips and some wire.
solder a wire to the center and the side of the bulb with an alligator clip on each end.

Thats not the meter you need ...
try this one

Mrmerlin - would this one do the trick? I'd rather buy it local then over the net.

The second meter you posted will work fine ,
and you dont need a test light for now, if you have that meter.
a ground point in a 928 is where the brown wires are bolted to the chassis.
The rear light ground point is behind the RR quarterpanel liner inside the hatch,
to get to it you need to remove the rear carpet,
then the few screws along the bottom of the right quarter liner,
then the cargo hold down ( this may be too rusted to unscrew).
If the hold down is out of the way then you can bend the liner just enough to fit your hand behind the liner without snapping it and damaging it.
A 10 mm wrench is needed to loosen the bolt thats holding the brown wire bundle.
Go to the drug store in the school supplies isle get as few of the ink/pencil erasers use these to clean the elex ground connections.

Just went back to find mysterious ground point and for the fun of it, started the car and put all of the lights on. Everything works fine now. I did not do anything. Any ideas??? I now want to get to the bottom of it...
