RPM signal for traqmate
Hey Guys
I am trying to hook up the RPM feature on my traqmate where is the best or easiest place to attach the blue traqumate wire to the car to get a good signal?
Is there a possibility of damaging the traqmate if this is done wrong? Can I check the out put with an electrical meter befor I attach to the traqumate?
What should I check for amps? volts? Cycles?
Thanks
Sean

For logging RPM, I recommend using the MSD 8918 GMR pickup. You can use one of the low side coil wires for the MSD trigger.
I prefer the isolated sensor for logging as opposed to using the signal from the LH... especially if racing where a short could cause you a DNF.

For the RPM signal off of the LH you could tap into pin 1 of the harness (Thanks to Ken- Porken one of our resident inventors for these pinouts):
Ken sells a plug you can put in between the plug and the LH so you don't have to hack the harness. It's called the 'Bridge-it'. I've got one that I use to pull the RPM signal and some other things (like idle and WOT) with my innovate setup.

I contacted Ken about a month ago about getting a Bridge-It, but he siad he is no longer making them. I believe he lost his salvge yard connection, and he indicated the time required to make one as cost prohibitive. So I ended um making one for my self, by salvage yarding a Saab computer and connector as the doner.

Sorry for the misinformation. It's still on the website so I thought he was still making them.

I should have taken pic's of the process but didn't think of it till afterwards. I can take pic's of the finished product and try to describe the process, but it would have been much better to have taken pic’s along the way. I suppose I could salvage another computer and make a second one but without a hookup at a yard they're not cheap. When I got mine from the local yard I made sure to cut off the harness plug and leave it on the computer as it is necessary to make the adaptor unit. I also picked up a 25 pin D-sub connector from radio shack so I would have a organized interface to the adaptor. I then just put crimp D-Sub pins on the loose ends of my data cable so I can plug in or switch signals conveniently. By the way making one is a bit time consuming as well. If I can come up with a cheap computer I may consider making a second one and documenting how to make your own.

Although I do have the parts on my desk to assemble a 35-pin "bridgit" with pigtails off the LH.. so I will have a solution thats more easily portable (i.e. can use it in my 87's easily).

If it's a 5-speed car, you should have an empty relay socket where the kickdown relay would be on an A/T equipped car. Terminal 31b of that empty relay socket is usually a quick and convienient place to just plug a male spade terminal into and get a tach signal from.
