Oil filter rant. Why do people crank them down.
Can anyone explain why people think that the oil filter has to be "as tight as they can get it"........
Just trying to pull the one of my 88 I purchased. I usually wipe the filter of with a rag and spin it off on my cars. Never had a leak.
I broke the pin in my filter tool its so darn tight. Headed up now to buy another one. What a pain in the ****!

Its off....... wow. Not sure I have ever seen one so tight. It was a porsche filter.
Half turn after it seats is enough typically. Never had one leak and have never needed a filter wrench.
We did the same on even our farm equipment and trucks. At most would need a piece of sand paper in your hand after cleaning the filter off.

screwdriver and hammer!
never had to do that, but my grippy oil wrench has made a crushing mess out of the oil filter on occasion. never more than a half of a turn tighten, but they sure become tight!
glad you got it off!

Just get one of these (000.721.920.40, tool 9204):
Makes removal (and installation) a snap.
I think they were a lot cheaper (than the current $45.81) when I got mine many years ago.

Blandis, I guess it just depends on who put it on by hand. Your PO could have been a 600lb gorilla.
RKD, I thought that it was just me but I sometimes have a heckuva time getting my oil filler cap off and I swear I didn't put it on that tight.
Maybe it's Porsche trolls that come to your house in the middle of the night to jack with you while you're sleeping.

screw driver through with hammer was req'd for our '83 as well.
I figure it's like spark plugs, where most don't understand "snug" and figure tighter is always better...so they turn it until it won't turn anymore. At least it isn't a spark plug

I think what happens it that when the filters and filler caps are installed there is an oil film on the seal, however after time and heat cycling that oil works its way out of the pressure area between the seal and block/filler neck. The friction of the dry rubber seal is of course much higher than that of oiled seal when it was installed.

Had to use the screwdriver trick a couple times on filters I didn't install. I use a Craftsman strap wrench, never have a problem. A little oil on the seal, hand tight and then 1/4 turn with the strap wrench, comes off without a problem too.

I'm with you Brad. I have a variety of filter wrenches and I've still had to resort to the screwdriver a few times. Hand tight, even if you are a 600 lb gorilla, should stay on and come off wihout needing a screwdriver.

I tighten them more than they claim you need to. I've had several filters (guaranteed on a Chevy) get loose and leak a couple of thousand miles after installing. I finally asked a head Porsche Training Tech how tight they wanted the filters. He told me that the tell the "little techs" to tighten them as tight as they can get them, by hand. He looked at me and said that I might not want to tighten them quite that tight...but certainly tighter than the "accepted" 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches.
