If not a 928, what's the closest car like it?

Lots of ways to look at this. I think an example needs to be made in large enough numbers to be in the same league. No way you can dis the rear seats - they are a reason the 928 is special, otherwise it is just a Corvette. We have a family and the emergency use of the rear seats makes all the difference in useful application.
The GTO is almost a consideration, but my wife is short and when sitting in a GTO the A-pillar is right at her temple and the rear seat has poor access considering how big the car is.
Don't think the newer Mustangs were mentioned - with no spoiler or stripes and leather they aren't that bad.

BMW 850 6 speed. With suspension and exhaust it would (I'm guessing) be pretty nice. There are quite a few 6 speeds out there too. Here's a pic of one fs with a CSI front bumper cover.

Maintenance history would be the key...

Nothing really does it all like the 928, but a lot of good runner-ups have been mentioned.

I found a site the other day on a corvette model called the L88 made from 67-69, very few built. Very cool looks and great performance.

+1 on the 240Z... but it's gotta have a V-8. Ran a few small chevy 240's back in the day, last iteration was an over the counter 400 ci crate motor, Super T-10 4 speed, comp rear, etc. What an animal.

I'd forgot about the old Datsuns... I used to think these were really hot when I was a kid.

Love the late 60's to early 70's "Stingrays"... great looks, but the drive... not so much.

Lot of different opinions here. It's cool.

For a long time, I have tried to theorised what makes the 928 so special, so different.
It has been compare with the BMW 850 or even the 840 but as the BM is a more modern car it never has the same taste as the 928 has. Also in the GT world most of them are really not 2+2 coupe as the rear seat is symbolic...as it is the cas of vantage or 996 and 997. Corvette C5 and C6 did not have rear seat at all.

each time you compare the 928 to another car, there is a little difference which make it unavailable.

Then, I theorise it as the 928 is the only GT coupe 2+2 as sporty as a 911. It is then the only sport car which make possible holidays with mum and children.

But, If I would choose a moderne car to replace the 928, I think (If I was able to pay for it as I don't want to sell wife and house for a car!) I would look for Aston martin DB9 or Vantage, with a preference for the vantage (as I sell wife, I offer children for $1 more).

Has anyone mentioned the Alfa 8C Competizione already as a 928 replacement?

I shot this picture in Italy in July 2006. The car being a pre-production sample. Some car magazine was really delighted when they got my picture.

This thread has no direction and is just a list of other cars we'd like to have. I'm going to impose some order on it.

To qualify, a car has to meet all of the following charactistics the 928 possesses: High performance, 4 usable seats, GT, high build quality, highly engineered, reliable enough to be a daily driver, "it's own model" (i.e., not a special version of a common model).

Further, there shall be two classes: Contemporary - those cars that were produced in the same era as the 928, and Successor - those cars that were produced after the 928 ceased production but could be considered as carrying on the tradition.

I already said it: 300ZX 2+2. They even look like a 928, inside and out. Rear steering, too. An obvious mimic of the original.

Makes me glad I own the Porsche!

To me it's always been the Ferrari 456, moreso than the BMW 850.

Looks like the 456 is also very capable of getting into 928 mileage territory. 175,000 mile 456 on Ebay.

Let a friend that has a very nice hot rodded Camaro drive my GTS. He comment was, "Wow, it feels so sophisticated."
