+1 on being ready, sometimes that isn't enough. And there is always the fear of the unknown. It can be frustrating, VERY. First shark I looked at was '86 5-speed, on consignment to Pcar dealer, it had been listed for over a year. Had it inspected, I offered 8K to the 9K being asked, prepared to meet in the middle. He accepted the 8. A week later sold it to someone else, I had put $$ down, but dealer really had no leverage so the deal fell out. I guess my offer made someone else come forward (neighbor?) with the $$ and seller just took the easier track. Dealer lost commission and the +/- hour his mechanic spent on it. Sandhill cranes have nothing on the dance that can ensue during a proper courtship of a shark.

RE: cheap 5-speed (or AT for that matter) It should be clear, cheap is relative, and pushing the odds against you. There are many threads here about buying a cheap shark.

You may notice that I (some others) spend time here commenting on the psyc of sellers and what they have in their car, etc. It interests me b/c of the dance and trying to figure out what is in the deal. It's fun to watch, but not fun if you have time, and/or $$ invested. Cable poker is boring. Good luck with the search.

Maybe from a $ POV, but it made the car easier to purchase and easier to justify with my SO. The incremental expenditures beyond intital purchase are easier to justify as well.

I bought an '85 5spd last feb. I paid $8600, and frankly, I think I got a screaming deal. No way would I part w/it for less than 12K.

No sure how far you want to travel, but there always seem to be a unusually high number of cars on CL in the Tampa / Orlando area - some better then others of course. Would be an awesome drive home to TX from there if you had some time.

He filled out the ebay ad inputs wrong, but mentions the "rare auto" in the ad.

Craigslist connected:

Priced quite high for mileage (no matter on engine replacement) as well as body damage, color, and I don't think its an 86.5.

Sometimes I get irritated when people price the 928 they have in some form of "its an exotic, with nearly no real resalevalue, but maybe I will find a sucker" thinking. 4000 dollar 79s with torn interiors, 15,000 86s that have more miles than 7k S4s.

Its just stupid.

Well... there's 5 spd's out there. I just snagged an 80 with ~100k on the clock for less than 3k. Figure 2-3k in catch up maintenance, then drive the **** out of it for another 200k. Works for me.

Well as one of those recent first time Porsche and 928 owners who bought cheap I went in with my eyes open thanks to having spent considerable time looking at this and other 928 forums.

That said anyone buying a 20+ year old car should expect issues. From my perspective I would be a lot more annoyed if I bought a $5000 928 and then had the in-tank pump fail and have it freeze inside the tank resulting in the need to replace the tank than I am with my $500 928 which by the way I am doing now.

Now if you can find a 928 that has had every part replaced in the last 2 years and every bolt removed and reinstalled with anti-sieze you might get by for a while without the extra issues that occur in an old car any time you start a replacement.

Mark,

I agree totally! A DESIRABLE, presentable, enjoyable, ready to drive 5spd 928 (of any style, OB, S, S4, GTS) is going to be more than $7k... Every now and then you find someone in a pinch that needs to get out quickly and they fire sale a decent car for that, but most of the 5spd cars in that price range are going to need some paint and some interior work of some kind.

Auto cars, there are nice ones out there.

Oh, on the shipping front... $1100 from SoCal (and my guess probably FL too, but I would be less willing to get a car out of FL than the desert of CA) to Austin... Enclosed...

BTW, Carl' idea, of 'buy a "cheap" 5 spd and see how it goes', TERRIBLE advice! Sorry Carl, but that is the WRONG way to go with ANY 928...as noted here about a zillion times it is RARE that a "cheap" 928 EVER IS!

If it looks good then you got a good deal...I won't drive a car that looks like crap in or out, so for me buying cheap is hard to do because I normally have to do paint and interior work which bring the whole, "you are $10k away from a $5k car" to mind...

If you don't care that your ultra elegant super sexy super car looks like $hit on the inside and the outside then fine, but to me that is just WRONG!

Quick Reply: Why can't I find a good 5 speed 928 for 5-7K?
