Why can't I find a good 5 speed 928 for 5-7K?

The difference in the long run is likely how good you look sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck as it seems to me regarless of how nice the paint and interior and how thick the service records every 15-30 YO car will stop running for some reason at some point

James provides sound counsel. Every 928 buyer should have a clear understanding of what they are buying into. There is no such thing as a cheap 928 at any sales price

But it doesn't mean that the cheap ones at time of sale are not as much fun as a premium priced 928. The difference is I know I bought a POS (in the eyes of some here and my lovely bride)! I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. And despite the challenges I would do it again because a large part of the fun is belonging to this band of brothers (i.e. gluttens for punishment)

Let's Face it, the only folks that can truely understand / appreciate the 928 appeal are other 928 owners either former, current or the want to be's.
The only cheap ones are inherited (or pure luck).

Sorry Brian for OT.....

Most cases James yes but I drove it and have to say, it's worth it. Few small things but like most on here, these are minor items to take care of. Receipts in a thick 3 ring binder, clean exterior and interior, sport seats etc etc. Not a concours car but still it's a nicely spec'd S4 as close to GT (AdamB's quote) that was possible in 87.

Things I'd do:

Short shifter and rear shifter bushings
Address reverse gear chatter (Bell housing per Colin is loose)
Tighten up front spoiler
Buy some tools for the toolkit
Fix door panel tear
Bellhousing bolts
Flappy/Intake R&R
Vacuum Kit
OEM air filter, gear oil & oil change
Speaker grills re-attached
??

To have a nice looking car in and out and a nice driving car you would be putting another $10k in it EASY...I suspect this "cheap" '87 S4 will be the same story. Some people don't care if they drive a car that looks like $hit in and out and that is a fine ride for them...I can't stand that personally, so for me no bargain 928 EVER IS... They end up on the save thread! LOL!

^^^^^^
Every now and then a real deal comes along... this may be one of them. Sounds like it does not need to much interior work which is a real plus and cost saver. One man's good paint is another man's need for a complete respray, so you never know on that front and that gets expensive quickly!

Maybe it will go to a very good home that will keep and love it and most importantly take care of it and fix all the little things to really make it a great car again!

Awesome! I was going to call you and asked if the car was picked up yet! We had a hellacious storm this morning and this evening and I was worried they might not have made it on time.

Can't wait to hear more about this car!

Brian,
If you get a chance, make a trip up to DFW and stop by our GTG at the first of the each month. I would love to see it since the last time I saw you was right after you got Sexual Chocolate sorted out....

Enjoy!!
