Default '10 Modern child car seat for the 928 - Sunshine Kids Radian65SL

Just wanted to post this up as it's own thread because I know alot of folks may be looking for a modern child car seat for your 928.
What spurred the search for a modern replacement was this thread.

Here's what I found, the Sunshine Kids Radian65SL - Sunshine Kids Radian65

May be used for children up to 65 pounds in 5-point harness. This is great from a safety point-of-view, but also because the Pre-'88 928's have no shoulder harness fors the rear seat

It's a steel frame construction, so you know it good.

The fit is fanstastic and the backrest rake angel matches that of the 928 rear seat back.

The is a Radian80SL model for up to 80 pounds, but the 5-point harness is only good for 60 pounds and 53" just like the Radian60. So I see no practical difference.

I've included a couple pics showing:
1. Why not to use the rear most footman loop near tool cover for the back-strap. Weak!
2-3. Proper back-strap location just behind the rear seat. Used 5/16" thread x 1/2" long (class 8) w/washer and locknut. Bummed the hook bracket from my wifes X3. You will have to find your own for this.
4. Great fit!

Caveat emptor: This is a safety device. It is your responsiblity to do your own research before safely using. This thread is intended for information and reference purposes only.

Great find and thanks for posting. Do you think their booster would fit also?

Karl,
It won't fit, sorry. If it did fit, it would require a shoulder belt... which most 928s don't have. For those with shoulder belts, still wouldn't work because of how the lap belt is positioned.

Most awesome find Jim! I've been looking hoping for a more modern solution. Many have cited Britax's NLA seat as a good option but the ones I found were really worn out.

Thanks for the post. Most helpful.

Hi Jim: 3-point rear belts were standard from MY 1988.

For me, that's the easiest way to tell apart 87 and 88 models...

Jim

The hook bracket that anchors the rear/top of the child seat should in a 928 be an L shape so that the hook clips into an eye that is vertical thus almost eliminating bending in the bracket and securing bolt.

I would surmise that the bracket from the X3 is mounted at the very rear of the trunk on the floor or possibly on the back of the seat so that the load is applied in the line of the bracket not perpendicularly to it.

Good pics though.

Default Will design a proper hook bracket. Does anyone need one?

Nice catch on the hook bracket! And yes, it was oriented vertical on the X3.

I'm going to have a proper "L bracket" fabbed up w/my local sheetmetal guy.

I can have some extra brackets made for other people who may need them. My guess is they'll be around $20-30. If anyone is interested, just drop a line in this thread and I will get the design and cost together.

Thanks. Jon!

This is huge.

I have never been comfortable with any past solutions for my kids riding in the back of my 928, and more vocally, neither has my wife.

They will soon be too large for this (if only I had seen this a year or two ago!), but it will greatly increase my comfort level in having them along for the ride now...

Hi Jim

I'm surprised that you can't purchase them locally. When I imported my 928s into Australia They had to be fitted with the brackets for the rear tether to pass the import inspection. Picked up a pair at my local parts shop for about $15 with bolts and spacers to get the bracket above the carpet.

I'll dig them out and measure/ photo them for you.

Cheapest place that I could find was here:

http://carseats.babycatalog.com/infa...eat/r65sl.html

On sale for $179, no shipping or sales tax. The almost 4-year old is psyched to have her booster for 'the fast cars'.

I'm in for 2, possibly 4 of the brackets if they cannot be sourced through retail.

Rob - thanks for the link. I did notice the "Champagne" option.

Oops, forgot to say I'm in for 2 of the brackets as well, Jim. Thanks!

We use the Radian 80 in my Cayenne and the wife's IS. It is really stout and well made.
