Urathane Supply Company sells a number of products for repairing plastic. One in particular is their plastic welding rod. They sell some flat strips for a dollar each with fibrated pastic. The material can be applied with a soldering iron and bonds with most plastics.

They sell a flexible filler that comes as two parts and easy to feather sand. While I use SEM plastic primer for the bumpers Urathane Supply sells a water based product that is just as good. I am sure tou know to use a flex agent in all paint coats. I use SEM flex agent and it seems to work nicely.

Wow...How did I miss this thread?

Engine bay looks great! Makes me feel lazy.

I like the idea on triming the front bumper. Wished I had thought of that when I was doing Garrett's.

Default flex agents... yes!

Yeah, the flex agent I have been using... The bumpers are way way too flexible. As for the plastic weld. I've seem some of those materials used on vw plastics however, was unsure of how they would bond to the porsche bumpers. I used bulldog, as a base primer, and as a flex agent in the primer. Thats the instructions I recieved from the local ppg distributor.

Dean, as for your build. That car looks awesome! I was originally going to build mine the same way you did. However I discovered that I needed to pull my motor for some head repairs, and said... well screw it the motor is out, and 7 bent valves later... found I had some spare time on my hands, and not a lot of extra $$! So complete teardown ensued!!!

You started your build after mine and you finished before me!! So I'm jealous!

I want to drive it, further than up and down the driveway!!

I am still confused. What does trimming the bumper accomplish? Are you trying to get the bumper closer to the body and eliminate the fender beading?

I saw one car where the bumper was molded into the body and then painted. Looked nice but it does present some future mainetnance problems.

Are you talking about rear. bumper or front bumper? As I've mentioned both?

I shaved the license plates holes in the front bumper simply for a cleaner look. Nothing more was done. Aside from a lot of sanding and making it perfect for paint.

As for the rear bumper... it's still stock, however I would like to shave/remove the retarded looking U.S. black rubber bumperettes and by doing so I would like to reduce the depth of the license plate hole.... But that's a project for another day. As it would require a redesign and a strengthening of the bumper, in order to get it to bolt to the aluminum rebar underneath properly.

I'm not trying to eliminate the body gap welting or smooth the bumpers to the body. They still need to be removeable for maintenance purposes.

It's funny how people have a certain knack for things. I've got 7 vehicles torn down at the moment.

Funny thing is... I can remember phone #'s, vin's, license plate #'s, etc. I can pull the bolts off and lay them down on the ground next to the vehicle and put it back together. I remember exactly what bolt and hardware came from where.

But if you introduced yourself and told me ur name left and came back I'd most likely forget if I didn't write it down. DOH!!

One likes to think it is a talent to work on a car and maybe it is. When I was young I used to think I had a talent. Then I started a shop and hired people. There is a quantum leap between my talent and those I hired. One guy built his own race car, won the formula Ford class at sears point and ended up as a mechanic for Bondurant before they moved south. This guy jammed with the local groups like Huey Lewis and a few other well known groups. He used the loft in my shop for practices. That is the nights when he was not doing body work on my cars. He with a helper could staighten out three VWs with paint in an evening. Each one got better and each one took less material. He also made jewlery on the side.

Now as far as a personality - well one cannot have everything. For most I think it is just like everything else. Start simple and slow and build up. Probably a quarter of my time working on the 928 is experimenting seeing what works and what does not. There are a lot of simple things - like replacing the blue clutch fluid tube with better rubber - that add greatly to the reliability. One has to go beyond just replacing parts.

Keep up the good work. I was not aware the front plate too shaving the bumper. I just used some flexible putty to fill the holes. As far as modifing the back bumper - if you had another broken bumper and cut out the lower center section you could weld in some new material. This could come down to the support bar on the lower edge. The flex rod I mentioned from Urathane Supply company and a adjustable soldering iron could easily weld in the new panel over the old one giving adequate strength to last. The Euro rear bumper does not have the little rubber bumpers and could get the look you want. You would either need to patch the fog light hole or maybe put in a better back up light.

I think working on cars is an "acquired talent" you build skills and patience the more time you spend working on them. What's funny tho, is my dad builds bugatti's. His dad had no patience for cars, and drives them into the ground, and doesn't turn any wrenches on them. My moms dad was a gearhead, and did nothing but tune big block mopars.

My brother always had a huge desire to own a 92-93 VW Corrado SLC 2.8 vr6. Now he owns a very nice example, and everytime he attempts to modify it... I end up having to help. He just literally doesn't have the patience to work with it. But yet I can sit for hours and hours chasing wires, retaping harnesses, and block sanding. Its funny where everyones comfort zones are with workin on vehicles.

I was invited to run my 86 mk2 jetta (very quick/nimble, long list of modifications), and the 928 at the bugatti club when they rent the race track to test the cars! I should have some really neat pictures from that outing! It'll be next year, but none the less!

This 928 will be my fourth complete paint job. Sanding still sucks but, the finished product really depends on it.

Like you said. I think that the bumper is easily modified. I would like to try my hand at it, and change it around a bit. But I'll wait to see how my finished paint job turns out, and drive it a bit!! I think I'll track down a euro bumper for sure. That's what I was originally considering.

As well if you noticed the front bumper is an S, so it has the cutouts for the brake ducting, so I intend to uprate the brakes, and I also plan on designing my own cooling ducts that attach to the bumper without needing the 83 front spoiler. I will definitely check out urathane supply co. I have some custom pieces to make for this car!

If you can find a 78 rear bumper it only has small cut outs for the bumperettes instead of the triangle cutouts on the later cars.

The early front bumper from the non S cars had no cut outs for the brake vents. I agree the front S spoiler is lame. There has to be a better way to bent the brakes. Porsche proabbly agreed because there is less air flow on the S4. The non S US cars are from 78 to 82. Of course a lot of people upgraded these cars to look like an S, but there should still be alot around.

Need to get to painting with all this nice weather we're having in colorado.... want her presentable! Had a good time hanging out with the local 928 guys today. Fred, Emmanuel, Mark, and Bill. Very hospitable and friendly. Nice guys, great looking cars. Thanks. Needed some inspiration!
