or you can get 22mpg by driving the car to the track as I have done, nearly 90% of the time.

you cant do THAT in any other race car and hold a candle to the 928!!

2 sets of rims, tent, bedding, tools, spares, food, cooler, (2) 5 gal gas jugs,
race gear, scooter, etc etc.

My only point was that it can be done on a budget if you're willing to sacrifice comfort to save the money for consumables.

BTW, by flat-towing, I can use a small SUV and I get 16-18 mpg towing. Not much worse than the POS gets tooling around town.

absolutely! thats when I take the tahoe and trailer so I can take the BIG tent and all the gear! there are showers at the track, we ride the bikes on the track after race hours, and the best part of that, is waking up AT the track, no commute time so you can sleep in!

OK. SANE people spend thousands. Mark gets free tires, runs his pads to the plate, never changes oil or lube, camps at the track and eats for $10 all weekend.

Going to the track and having some fun vs winning and/or being competitive, $ -> $$$$$.

Seems to me the best way to get something like this going is for more people to build 928 track cars and go out and have fun with them, maybe give some drivers of other cars an opportunity to drive it and have some fun and then we get converts.

Which motor and injection would we be talking about, and which of the options could be compensated for by higher weight or something to stay in the same class?

Would a Euro hybrid be too much cost/power etc?

Tire costs look like the biggest expense, so anything that puts a lid on there cost would help. Any level of popularity and the supply of free tires would be grabbed up quickly. A level playing field might mean speccing a DOT tire. I would not be opposed to any change and wheels that resulted in a better supply of tires, but no clue in what size might be best to migrate to.

255/40/17 NT01s are only $187 per tire and don't need to be shaved

Great idea!!! I say allow Euro engines and I'm in.

With a restriction on tire size, it may not be necessary to restrict brakes to pre-S4. I hate to see restrictions on safety items.

275 and 305 toyos can be found ALL day long with only a few heat cycles on them for $50, and dont hate me for picking up scrubs for free. I even found a couple of goodyear R1s the other day. had to take them home like a couple of puppies from the pound. If you dont care about $1000, go ahead and buy a new set and throw off the "expense curve". . But , I guarantee you this, new vs old tires wont make a hill of beans difference when you race me on the track with the older tires, unless they are REALLY old. I cant tell you of the many starts where my closest competitor put on stickers that didnt buy him anything. I have lots of video of those little lables going round and round until they wear off during qual or the first lap of a race.

Glen, wrong again!

However, yes, free tires, (and a few of them were $25 a piece, but not that many), and the are available all over the web.

Now, as far as brake pads, no....... they are changed at 5-6mm. (very conservative)
oil changed, every 4 weekends, sometimes 3. thats more than Anderson.
Lube? what are we driving here, chevy novas with grease fittings?
Yes, I do camp at the track and eat filet minon, hambergers, salad, cereal for breakfast, fruit, smores for the kids, corn on the cob, salad, cookies, all sorts of things, that I bring with me to the track and would have eaten anyway at home. wow, what a concept during these tough economic times!
Its using you head Glen, not your wallet and that carries over to the car too.

oh, by the way, the $10 is usually for icecream for the kids, as I dont have a freezer .......yet.

Now Glen, I ask you..... WHO IS SANE or INSANE???

That picture of your boys on the flat trailer is priceless.
Also, great way to get ahold of tires. I'll remember that. I'm never above a good dumpster dive!

Have you noticed the cars and drivers Im competing against? David Smith of American sedan fame, coached by Johannas VanOverbeek, and a LOT of cash dumped into a PTG like M3, monster money pit Camaros, S2000s with 600hp, Subarus, top in Time Attacks, mustangs, WC -like Vets, spec 911s, pumped up 911GT3RS street cars modified to race specs, et, all costing 5-20x of what I have into the 928. competitive? have you seen the videos? like I said, its not only fun, its relatively competitive, as long as something doesnt have 5-600hp. So, in the club racing scene, its a top competitor and usually up toward the front to win, sure, I would have to dump some money in to an intake and some better shocks and brakes, but compared to what is needed to win a POC race in anythig else, its pretty cheap.

Now, besides being competitive, have you notice from my race reports how many REAL major issues all these cars have, even with pro support and maintenance. Hmmm, you would think that if they didnt want to empty their wallets, they would just get a 928 to run how I have for the last 5 years alone!
. when I break, its a $5 broken gear shift lever, or a lose shift linkage bolt, or a broken winding on an alternator. when they break, its a new $20k engine, transmission, differential, bent valves or ECU issue.

LOL! yes, some even pay the silly $20 extra dollars on top of the $1500 they need to get a set of hoosiers on their car. Or they do the practice the day before. However, I do like to pick up scrubs from the guys that are nice to the tires, or at least pull them off early.
