944 turbo S is a great machine - comfortable, fast, easily adjustable for track events and back to street. Pretty much bulletproof.

Get both, or either.

But what you desperately need, whether you know it or not, is a 928 Turbo.

Maybe 20 years ago before they got the crap beat out of them. Hard to find one worth bringing home, now.

928 ownership is a committment. You need to be willing to do you own work or be committed to spend a LOT of cash to someone to do the work for you. When they and are maintained properly, they are a very fun car. If you ( or the previous owner) neglect them... They can become very frustrating very quickly.

I agree, a lift in the garage and a lot of tools is a prerequisite.

I've owned 2 944 Turbo S's and 2 928's, a 90GT and currently a 94GTS. I'm the type of enthusiast that actually drives my cars and fixes every little thing that rattles, squeaks, or doesn't feel or work right. I drive around town, club tours and trips, and autocross once a month. Here are my impressions...

The 44 Turbo feels faster because the power increases as RPMS increase but the 0-60 times in stock form are the same.

The 928 just plain sounds better and is more comfortable cruising.

The 928 feels much heavier cruising around town, but a lot smoother and more stable out on the highway at speed. 44 feels like you are in a single engine prop job, 28 feels like cruising in a personal jet.

The 944 eggs you on to drive faster and makes a maniac out of a minivan driver. Driving around normally the boost comes on just as you are about to shift and make you want to wrap it on up and drive more aggressively. 928 is easier to drive more relaxed and just cruise around but still becomes a roaring beast when the go pedal hits the floor.

Autocrossing the 44 is easier to get to and well past it's limits. The 28 takes time and practice to reach the limits of it's abilities. Have set FTDs in both.

When driving the 44 people (and cops) treat you like you are a teenager the 28 like an adult.

The 44 is easier to hot rod and more tempting to, but that "bullet proof" reliability goes out the window. Even with just chips.

The 44 gets rattley quicker.

This statement should be bold red. And blinking.

^^ For both 944 Turbo and 928 alike. Local Mom and Pop Porsche shop says 944 Turbo spends more time in their shop than 928. My ownership of both agrees.

I have just spent the last three years restoring a 1968 Camaro. I am confortable with tools (may garage is full of them).

i just need to learn how to work on a 928.

That the car...no doubt in my mind!!!

Well in that case... you just need to get Metric tools and you're all set. All the knowledge you need is here and in the workshop manuals (available in CD format and I believe dowloadable). The 928 really is not that complicated if you've done previous mech work.

So now it sounds like you just need to find the car that's right for you.

What are you feeling? Auto, 5-speed, old style, new style(S4)? What's your budget?

And that my friend is something you will learn a lot of.

They are frustrating when things are not perfect, but man is it nice to get in one that is right and go on a thousand mile trip.

I think I want a red or black one. I really like a tan interior. I like the 5 speed but I'm ok with an automatic.

Definately an S4. I love the later look.

I'm planning on spending $10,000 to $15,000 for the right one.

I'm in no hurry, I just don't want to make a mistake with someone elses headache.

My favorite line so far..."When driving the 44 people (and cops) treat you like you are a teenager the 28 like an adult".

The cars are different enough that driving them should determine which one speaks to you. I like the 944 Turbo, I have had two of them but did not care for one as a daily driver. Too many stoplights and too much stop-and-go for the Turbo, with it's lack of low end and track gearing. They are great once you get them going but off the line you have a big hole to crawl out of.

The Turbo is much better if you want to mod it a little and have the cash to support that habit. You can do a few upgrades here and there (or jump in with a big pile of money.) There are mods for the 928 but not that deliver bang-for-the buck (other than perhaps an RMB) until you get a supercharger.

Overall I feel the Turbo is a much bigger maintenance hassle but opinions vary. Either one will kill you if you get a badly maintained or abused example and/or if your subsequent work is not up to snuff.

The question really should be answered by determining for yourself which one you would rather drive.

-Joel.
