Default Tail cap won't shine up like the rest of the car.

Nose cap, too. Both look dark and very dull, no matter what I do to them.

What's your trick for getting that painted fiberglass to shine?

If it's stock, it's not fiberglass. It should shine right up. Try MeGuiars 105 followed by 205, then wax.

If it's aftermarket fiberglass, improperly prepared gelcoat might be the problem.

A clay bar will help remove surface contaminants. It will not remove oxidized paint. You need a rubbing compund. The 105 I mentioned above does an excellent job of removing oxidized paint and swirl marks.

If it is anything like my Silver 85 the clear coat has failed on the bumper covers and has pealed exposing then underlying colored layer. Where the clear has pealed it still appears to be the same color it just doesn't shine, and in the areas where the clear is failing but hasn't pealed it has a hazy white tint over the silver. I think my only recourse is to repaint the bumpers (at least) if not the hole car.

And I'm sure you actually believe that will work

I began the process with Meguire's Ultimate Compound, and it worked great. The car is really coming into shape with five layers of Mequire's Deep Crystal Carnaubu wax.

Today I applied a layer of Surf City Detail Wax. I really like this stuff!

The tail cap is looking better after the detail spray, but it's way behind in overall lustre in comparison to the rest of the car. It looks darker, too.

Here's a view of the tail cap.

If it looks darker than the rest of the car, then it's probably been resprayed at some point and the colour match is off.
This can happen if the new paint is mixed from the paint code and not eye matched by the painter, paint codes don't take into account sun fading and differences in batches of paint used at the factory among other things.
Or if the painter only painted that one panel and didn't blend the new paint across the rear quarters.
Maybe the panel's off a completely different car from the wrecker.

Keep in mind too, different angles will produce a different shade.

If the quality and finish of the repsray isnt up to sratch, there's probably not much you can do besides getting it re-resprayed and having a competent painter eye match the colour.

You need to measue the ratio of cost vs how much it bugs you.

Damn, that car is fine.

You are in the minority, for sure, Maleficio, now even more evident.

Sub $5k and you drove away in it. Excellent stewardship. Keep it rolling.

Thanks, Landseer. At first I said I wasn't going to buy a 928, but I honestly couldn't pass up the deal.

You're paint already looks really good.

I Agree with Tim and Andrews reply although you could also use Meguiars #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish which is milder and will perform the same function (removing top layer of paint). Might be worth checking to determine if it has been resprayed since the color difference is notable. If you look at the paint very closely in direct sunlight and transition between the rear quarter and the rear bumper you can focus on how the metallic paint appears. If they look different (different size/shape etc) then it's a respray. Otherwise it could be the difference between the paints used for the bumpers (flex agents) vs what was used for the rest of the body.

The caps no doubt have been repainted with who knows what kind of paint......It might get shiney but may oxidize very quickly.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm not going to bother with having it resprayed. I figure if I'm going to go to that much trouble, may as well spray the entire car, and I don't have the funds for that.

I'll just keep massaging it until I'm burned out.

Quick Reply: Tail cap won't shine up like the rest of the car.
