Default pre 4-valve cars

My first post, and i have to say you all are very informative, i enjoy the read. my question is twofold, one why are people so down on pre 4-valve cars? and on euro or row cars when brought into this country are not the speedos supposed to be reset to what old speedo was at, you might guess mine is a 85 row car which i paid to much for but still like it very much. thanks, Ray

Wow, that's really nice. If its a 5 speed in particular, its pretty much one of the coveted pinnacles of 928 models.

More pictures! Are you on east coast, if so, SITM is within your range.

Welcome, and nice looking Euro !
I think you may have miss read, what post did you see that indicated that this forum is down on ROW and 16 valve 982 ?

A 310 hp 16 valve 4.7 ltr 5 speed 928 is very desirable and quite quick too. I certainly would not kick one out of my garage

Good lick w/ your 928 and keep the timing belt system in good shape, as yours is an interference engine and will bend valves if it fails.

Default pre 4-valve 928s

Thanks for making me feel a little better, as i am told i am an old fart then remembering anything is out of the question. I am a resident of FL in the sw. but spend summers in coastal ME. (and the 928 is in FL) very unhappy. It is a 5speed and drives good, one problem is shifting into 1st when moving and car is cold ,improves with warmup, does anyone think new trans oil would help? Car has only 8000 miles since last service (timing belt water pump etc) but it was about eight eight years ago. thanks, Ray

Welcome to the forum, and I am sure we all want more pictures.

I love the Euros and own two of them. The negativity here ranges from real issues, and a little "mine is best cause its mine" attitude.

Euro cars have a large element of roll of the dice when imported and federalized, odometer, smog controls, lights, exhaust, all tend to vary depending on the who and where that did it. Without hard documentation true mileage should always be considered unknown, with a general trend of frequently broken odometers, undocumented replacements, and no standard practice that I know of of setting the US odometer to the old mileage.

Even with low mileage, 8 years is a long time for a timing belt to go on a 85 which is an interference motor.

Ray,
We certainly need more pics and I don't think ANYONE is down on the pre 4V cars...I certainly am not! The '84-'86 EURO S cars are particularly desirable too! Yours looks very nice in the pics and I look forward to seeing more soon!

Heck, I look forward to seeing my own '85 EURO S soon! LOL! Dr. Bob has been playing with it in CA but his wife is at her wits end with the car in the driveway!

Hi, interesting the part about being federalized, this 928 has no smog pump or anything else which i do not understand but am happy to accept speedo says 47000 but i do not know. I know it was first reged in CT, then FL, when bought by the person in CT it had 26000 when the person in FL bought it it had 43000 i believe. The thing i really don't get is how the guy in CT got it reged in the first place, oh he got it from a follow in PA who i believe imported it (a dealer) and could not get it reged, i am lost there. And yes i know i should replace the timing belt and water pump and will as soon as i get back to FL. thanks,Ray A ps state of CT took off all the vin's they could find and put a CT# on it.??

The LH euro S is the hidden secret of 928's......VERY powerful and lighter than the 32V 928's..... Some people say the 86.5 is, but I like the Euro S LH

Part of the negative response is that you cannot register a Euro in Califonia unless it is registered here already so that eliminates the biggest market for Porsche cars. Second the odometers are almost NEVER right. It was common practice in Germany for dealers who specialized in selling used Porsche cars for export to roll back the odometers since the car was leaving the country anyway. Most "labs" which were bonded and did the federilization paperwork cheated and only did part of it....they had to submit photos of the MPH speedo , door crash bars , inoperative headlight adjusters , seal beam 7 inch headlights but soon realized that they could use the same pictures over and over and NOT DO THE WORK. The just charged thousands of dollars The reference to LH is the later style electronic injection with hot wire mass air sensor. Early Euro cars use CIS a mechanical injection with no brains. The Euro with a 5 speed is great fun to drive if you keep the RPM up where it likes to be.

I think you will find a VIN number on the passenger side, under the hood edge, along where the fender bolts down. Fender will have a cutout and the VIN visible beneath.
