Beware ANY S4 in the sub $10k price range! I am not saying decent ones are not out there, but you would be WAY, WAY better off getting a NICE S that you can enjoy and be proud of than a fixer upper S4 that is going to cost you another $5k+ to get as nice as a $7k - $8k S will be!

If you are THAT impatient then just drive up here to Cedar Park and lets get you in the '84 and get Matt to make that car a sweet ride for you and leave $1000+ in your pocket!

Avoid the '88 in New York. Test drove it last Thursday. IMHO It's about a $4000 S4 and there is no way those miles are correct.

ex-TBF failure car, but enthusiast owner, and Greg Brown did the engine replacement. Should be fine for a drive cross-country

Good job Brian...sorry again SC is gone. Are you able to rebuy and a lower price than the difference they offered or work with someone to part it out?

Brian,

What is the disposition of SC? Is someone going to be parting it out or buying it to rebuild?

James M. and many others gave solid advice about a car. You aleady went throught that a bit with SC as she needed a lot of work and unless you are in it for the challenge buying something that's straight sounds like a better option. I am enjoying the challenge of mine but it will be a while before she is a daily driver!

Good luck on the search.

BTW..I just grabbed these off of craigslist in a US Wide search. I haven't seen any of them..nor do I know anything about them...

that said..
The one in Illinois and the greg brown one seem like decent cars..pretty good deal if the replacement engine for the 89 was good...and if greg did it...I suspect it is... just a phone call away .

I've got a very eraly '87 S4 Auto. Vin ends in 0086. Production began with 0061, so this is the 15th car off the line. It's black on black and has been my project car. I bought it a couple years back then sold it to a guy in Ohio. He was doing an intake re-fresh when upon startup, there was a bad ticky ticky. He shut it down. Ended up taking the passenger head off and found a pebble has fallen into one of the cylinders. Luckily there was no damage. But then he ran into financial problems.

I helped him out by purchasing the car and finishing the head job. While everything was off I had the intake and cam covers powdercoated. It has new knock sensors, fuel lines, vacuum lines, breather hoses, wires, plugs, caps, and rotors. I only did the one head gasket as the old one that came off looked almost brand new.

I think it needs a timing belt, and am planning to do that job soon.

There are a couple of paint issues. There's a scrape on the driver front fender which I will get fixed soon. There's also a "spider web" crack in the paint on the front bumper. This will require sanding and re-spraying the front bumper. Not sure if I will do this or not.

The car has just shy of 93k miles on it. It has MSDS headers and a rasied hub steering wheel. No other options worth mentioning.

AC works great. Passenger door lock motor is not working right now - haven't even looked at it yet, but should be a relatively easy fix.

Oh yeah... it has a new windshield as of 2 years ago - old one was cracked.

I've checked the flex plate and there was nominal preload. End play of the crank was within spec - 0.20mm or 0.008". Spec is 0.40mm. Trans has been serviced with new fluid and filter.

It has new brake pads, but did not have my powerbleeder with me to fush the brakes, so that still needs to be done.

I was going to list it for $12,900, but I would be willing to let it go to you or another rennlist member for $11,000 firm. If I don't sell it, I'm going put a supercharger on it and list it for $16,000.

Tons of pics are here.

Album 1 from when I first bought it to some of the re-build:

Album 2 - more pics

A few pics to entice...
