Default 4.5 or 4.8 how to tell

Hi guys, I've done some searching but can't find what I want, so I need to rely on the expert knowledge here to get my answers.

I am looking at a 928 advertised as 1980,auto, 4.8L engine. First registered in UK, supposedly 1980, then some time betwen 1995 and now, imported to NZ.

Is there any way from chassis or engine numbers I can establish what year and what engine we actually have?

Thanks in advance.

block number will tell you everything. Its either 4.5 or 4.7liter
generally, the 4.7s were euro S model starting in '80 M28-11 would be the engine block

If it had a 4.8L then it would have a transplant from a new Cayenne or PanAm! LOL! 4.7L is the size for a 928 engine.

Stand at the front of the engine. Look into the edge of the valley, passenger side, with a strong light. Look for a flat surface with numbers.

He means the right side of the engine as seated in the car....this could well be a left hand drive car

Thanks for that, guys. The car is some 7 hours drive from me, so have asked the owner to find the number for me. Once I have that will report back so we can see what we have. Cheers.

to find the block number look at the engine with a droplight and find the top rad hose find the clamp that attaches it to the waterbridge, then come forward from the clamp about 1 inch then look under the hose you should see a flat portion of the block with numbers on it its about 6 inches under the hose it will say
M28/ ??
then another line of numbers under this line.
please report back

Well it's taken a while, however I now have the answer.
The car was up for on-line auction and the auction company were quite obstructive in letting me communicate with the owner. afraid I might circumvent the process and do them out of their cut.
I got a mate to go have a look, but neither he nor the owner managed to find what we needed. The fact that the car was outside and it was pouring down rain may have been a contributing factor.

Anyhoo, I didn't win the auction, but as luck would have it, a guy who lives not far from me did. he had the same intention as me, ( to part it out). So I was able to buy from him just the bits I needed, and not have to worry about on selling all the stuff that would have been left over.

To cut a long story sideways, it was a 4.5 liter engine.
Thank you to all of you who offered help in ascertaining this.
regards,
Struan.

Or you'd have 98mm pistons in it. I do!

Look for the block code, my friend, and cross reference it here: https://www.928gt.com/t-928engine.aspx

(Whoops... read to the end next time)
