Default Is $1,000.00 too much for a '89 928 valve cover gasket replacement?

Guys,

A couple of questions:

I've changed valve cover gaskets in my past. Is the 928 that difficult to do?

Is this guy wanting $1,000.00 to change the gaskets ripping me off?

The car is not in my home town, but in PHX where I will be picking it up on a purchase. I think the covers would be best to not be leaking oil as I drive it back 1000 miles to Dallas, TX.

Any help is appreciated!

Alex

Way too much. Gaskets cost what, $ 35 for two? That leaves $ 965. Recon labor $50/hour = 18 hours. It should be a few hours each. Then again, when problems arise, such as a broken cam bolt, the hours start adding up. Pick it up with leaking covers if they don't leak much, and bring it over to Sean.

Gad! I have changed the valve cover gaskets on my car and wouldn't want to have to do it again, but no, not difficult, just long and tedious. For a pro, $1,000 seems outrageous.

OTOH, I know our local Porsche dealer has a $150/hr labor rate ... so I guess they could be saying six hours at $150 plus $100 for the gaskets and 'shop supplies'.

Man this stuff can get expensive!

I'll do it for $600

EDIT: Unless they're so bad you're risking a fire while driving, I'd tighten all the bolts to 6 ft-lbs and bring it home, then DIY.

So long as the plugs are not submerged and the gaskets aren't gushing, it should be ok.

A photo of exactly the problem (if there is one) would be instructive, but its so busy in there that its not easy to shoot photos of sources wiithout disassembly.

Still, better to freight it to Sean. Get a fair labor price and a whole lot more expertise and value, I bet, that way.

Last thing you need is some yahoo wrenching on a 928 disturbing a fuel line before a voyage like that.

If it's an 85 or 86 be carefull to not over tighten the cam cover bolts, it can lead to the hollow bolt they thread into breaking on removal, which can be a HUGE pain if it happens from what I've heard.

When I got my car I was told the cam covers where leaking, so I bought a new set with the anticipation of needing to install them before driving. It turned out to be leaky power steering hoses.

Per the Pheonix mechanic, spark plug holes submerged in oil and leaking on manifold. I would hate to make the trip with that leaking on the manifold. BTW, I won't be paying for it, I got the dealer to foot the bill before I would pick it up. He was actually pretty good about paying for it since he was bending me over on the overall cost of the car anyway.
Man, I bet I could have flown Sean out there for that.... right?

Does the dealer and the mechanic know each other?

Sounds spot on for a dealer price.

There is a shop in the Phoenix area with extensive 928 experience. That's where the car should be. It sounds that right now it's at a place that is building in a lot of cushion for the unexpected, due to a lack of experience.

I can't think of the shop's name right now, even though I've actually met them... I'm getting old.

Maybe you can ping user "Alan" or any of the other Arizona shark owners to direct you to the right place.

Way too mutch.
At that price I would also have them powder coated for you.
But at a Porsche dealer, it can be close to 1000$ I guess!
They always charge to mutch anyway.

Get the dealer to pay for shipping to Sean. The are many many many horror stories of Porsche dealer mechanics messing up a perfectly good car. They don't work on 928's as there are not that many and they have been out of production for 15 years.

I bet you can get a good rate for shipping. I repeat, get the dealer to pay for shipping to Sean and you can pick up the VC gasket replacement. Exeperience is the ONLY that matters when it comes to a good 928 technician.

Trust me on this.

Outstanding shipping company -
