Default Aero Hood Modification (Before i cut)

I heard Ken has a nice hood vent configuration. Any pics before I pull out the cutting tools and vent a perfectly good hood?

the cut im making is identical to my last vent on the holbert car. 24" from the edge of front of the hood upward, and a trapazoid about 5" from the edges and about 7" in total width. it ends up being just around the cross bar area and ends up above the rear of the S4 fans. (so the air from the radiator has the most direct path to the hood vent, AND its in the lowest pressure region to draw the most air out and create downforce as well.

Thanks,

Mark

I looked all over for something with louvers in it. Now that I have the base, I could probably make some. The vent I have did not come with the mesh or the 4 center supports I had to make those too.

I'm surprised nobody has tried lying the radiator all the way forward and making a duct from the back of the radiator to the hood, like the GT40's.

Erik,

I looked at doing that. It would not be possible with with headlights being retained, as well as the stock S4 fans.

However I think that MK hood vent could be improved upon. Instead of cutting out and removing the material just cut the front parts and bend the material inwards, say around a 15-20 deg angle from the hood.

That was my plan and vlocity commented on it that he couldn't do it because of his SC.

I have a spare hood and checked the clearance. In a stock S3, you could cut it in at least 2.5 or maybe even close to 3" at the front (even with the belt driven fan) and have it come back almost as far as mid-engine. Even more if the oil fill were moved or modified. Add a wedge-shaped piece of aluminum or fiberglass to the two sides and you've got the Ford GT style circulation (more or less).

The opening would be in a place that rain would leak down in between the fan and the engine if it were sitting still.

I'm just afraid to cut

I thought about rotating the bottom of the radiator up close to the engine, with a duct.

I was thinking strictly track car, so no headlights and many of the race cars I've seen with this kind of setup do no have fans at all.
For tooling around the pits a pusher or two would be more than sufficient.

I think Imre did something to move his radiator a little bit and allow room for his home made SC.

Even tilting it a little bit and adding a hood vent with electric fan would probably be plenty.

Mark,

That cleaned up pretty nice.

I have another week of work on mine before I can role it out the door and see it in the light of day, I want to get my solid motor mounts and solid upper shock bushings in place.

Regards,

Ken

yep

ball park now, the widest edge is 5.5" from the sides of the hood. and the bottom of the trapazoid is 24" from the front of the hood. vertical width of the trapazoid is 5" and its about 20" across.

I made the angle a little less abrupt this time around, and I think it looks a little better. Ill get the exact measurements shortly.

Back to the paint, If I would have known how good that paint was, I wouldnt have been so rough on the roof. It actually looks really good. maybe with some red stickers that carve up the color sceme, Ill keep the base color black. It is factory paint and it is in pretty decent shape. never would have guessed it with how oxidized it was.
