Default Any great 928 mechanics near Roseville CA?

I'm getting my ducks in a row and need a good mechanic that knows 928s near Roseville CA. The car has 75k miles on it and will probably need the timing belt/water pump service. 4 years or 60k miles, whatever comes first as I understand it. I'll need to verify when/if it was done last. I don't feel comfortable with doing it as a DIY. Just for laughs I inquired at the local Porsche dealership.... $3,400...Yeah, right. $1,500 sound about right from an independent Porsche specialist?

Thanks!

Oh, you bought Steve's car. It shouldn't need much more than oil changes for quite a while. Just keep it clean. I think the WP/TB were done relatively recently. The book is every 60K miles, and that's what I do unless there is some special reason to do otherwise. So, I think you've got quite a ways to go before that is needed. I hope we get to see the car again at Sharks in the Park next month. Thanks for keeping this gem of a car in the area.

Not aware of good 928 mechanics in the Roseville area. Honestly, you are going to need this attention so infrequently, you might consider bringing it down this way to someone like Hi Tec in San Rafael when it time for the WP/TB.

Would LOVE to come to Sharks in the Park and I'll try to make that happen. It would be a blast to meet a bunch of you guys and gals... If the TB/WP HAS been done, I'm stoked cause then I'm good til 120! Or at least another couple years, if the 4 yr mark comes around 1st. Am I wrong on the 60k miles or 4 years? I forgot where I heard that...

I would not go 60 on any 4 valve motor, this is one time I do not agree with Bill.

I check mine more often than needed and will put a new belt and anything else it may need at 30, but it should not need any thing as all was replaced last time, all but the crank gear and it was perfect.

I check mine every year or 15K miles for tension, oil in tensioner and condition of the belt and rollers, but the book is 60K miles for a belt change and that's what I TRY to do with my car. I haven't always gotten to 60K due to other reasons. 30K seems awfully low. Every belt I have changed on my car was like new at 45-60K miles. I could still read the printing on the back and the inner surface looked perfect. Now, on other cars that have had failing parts, this hasn't always been the case, but if you change the bushings and rollers and the cam, oil pump and crank gears are good, 60K is OK with some periodic checking. Otherwise, I'm not sure why Porsche would have that service recommendation.

I know Bill, but it would just look so bad for a shop owner to have a bunch of bent valves in his own car.

I don't remember specifically about the TB/WP. Steve should provide that information/records. The factory service interval is 60K miles. There is no temporal service interval, but 5 years gets quoted often as if it is. I just go on miles and condition. Others don't. Also, there is no service interval, miles or time, for the WP. My car had service by the book by the PO, with its first timing belt replacement at 60K miles. I got the car 8 years later, with only 72K miles. I got nervous at 9 years after the timing belt job, even though it had only been 35K miles. The belt and the factory original water pump looked like new. I changed them. Had I known about all the trouble I have seen personally and reported here with replacement water pumps, I would have put that pump back on after checking it. It's a judgment call. Some people are more comfortable with very conservative approaches with more frequent belt changes. If I thought it made any difference I would be too.

Anyway, make sure you get information from Steve about all the service done on the car. I worked on the car with Steve, but I don't think we did the TB, although we probably checked it. I'd be glad to come up some time and do a timing belt inspection with you.

Amen on the water pump issues.

I think the condition of the gears, bushings, rollers, tension, etc has a major impact on belt life.

Default TB/WP

Timing belt and water pump were done by Devek at 60K in 2006. So, the belt has ~15k on it and is 4 years old. I have checked the belt/tensioner twice over the time since the belt was replaced.

Thanks, Steve. Appreciate the info.

Thanks Bill! That's a very generous offer, and I may take you up on that. I could even save you a trip since Alamo is about 5 minutes from Danville.

Thx,
Rob
