I had pulled the stock insulation out of the car before paint because it was moldy and dry and held water big time. The damaged insulation was mainly on the flat surfaces like the floor board and back deck. I left the stock stuff on most of the transmission tunnel and firewall. I never felt good about just putting carpet on the metal floor boards and I knew I could not afford the good stuff like DynaMat....so I picked up some cheap commercial carpet at Lowe's with a rubberized backing and tight looped weave. Cut and fit it as needed and glued it down so it should help with sound, some heat and vibration. Total cost...$28.00
Now I will have a soft flat area for the new carpet to sit.
I Know this maybe a little too red neck for some here.. ...but you don't see it after the carpet is installed and its got to be better than nothing.

Looks good dean. In my case, the sound deadening, and old carpet caused some severe rust due to a water leak the PO did not address...I will be cutting out some floor pan area and welding in new steel...interested to see how the carpet works out for ya!

Dean, your doing great, I am very impressed. You may want to check out Eastwood's "Dynamat equivalent" which sells for $129.00 each if you buy two boxes. But even one box covers around 33 square feet which should be enough for the floor boards and more, sells for $149.00. A lot cheaper than Dynamat which is way overpriced.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers!

There are a few places that sell an equivilant to the original mat. Closed cell foam over dynamat kills the heat and sound and gives a nice base for the rest of the interior. I think you might find some out gassing problems with commerical carpet. Generally automotive carpet follows a different spec than household carpet.

We actually use something very similar in the exhibit industry...we call it "wall rib" or "acoustical wall fabric"...we put it on conference room walls as sound deadening material. So, yes...it should work well for you!

Looks great Dean. It will certainly suffice for carpet backing but may do little or nothing for sound deadening and blocking heat.
The work you’ve done on this car is amazing. Don’t take this wrong, but, you don’t want to skimp on this. It will be a real pain to redo after everything is put back together.
That is a totally different application. You are keeping the sound from bouncing off the walls and around the room, not from coming through the walls.
I agree with that.

Took Denny's advice and went to Lowe's. Bought 2 rolls of Freeze King Duct insulation. $40.00 and some change. Pulled the carpet up and laid this under it on the metal floor board. I replaced the carpet so the new carpet will not slide around. I did glue the gray carpet to the shiny side of the insulation. This insulation is easy to work with and I WILL DEFIANTLY use it inside both door.
Back to putting the fuse panel back in and then figuring how the rest goes back together. If anyone has good photos of the wire routing, vac tube connections I could sure use them as mine were lost in a computer crash. I do have the PET printed and of course the manuals.

Tomorrow I hope will get a lot done thanks to BigAl1...I had lost all my photos I had taken while disassembling Marvin over 2 years ago due to a computer crash. Allan was kind enough to take time to resize and email about 120 VERY detailed photos for me to use in the dash / firewall area. It will be a HUGE help and I just wanted to thank him publicly. What a HUGE weight off my shoulders as I was about to freak the fudge out! This is a great community we have here.
THANKS again Allan...I owe you big time...as I do a few others here!

Yea, the owners both here on RL and in the 928 Owners Club REALLY are what make owning a 928 special! The cars are great and all, but that only gets you so far...the people are what really make it just THE BEST!
