928 Motorsports Ball Joint Rebuild Question
Purchased upper ball joint rebuild kit from 928 MS for my 84.
On the boot for the a-arm the spring retaining ring for the boot keeps sliding up over the top of the boot. Looks as if the factory boot had a groove in it for the retaining ring to sit in and not slide up over the top of the boot. The new boot is smooth where it slides up over the A-arm.
The 928 MS "how to" guide does not mention the boot ring going back on. How have most of you handled this?
Also replaced the lower ball joint dust boot, and cleaned all the old grease out and replaced. Not a bad job at all.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Same happened to me a while back. Its just simply doesn't work. I stuck it together for the time being without the ring and it doesn't therefore seal well. Definitely didn't seem like the right part.
Apparently there is an audi boot that will work. The part number can be found here with a search.

Got the audi boot for the lower and fits like a glove. Has the groove for the retaining ring and was really easy to replace.
For the upper boot that comes with the kit, seems like the diameter is just to big?
May stick it back together and let the DFW crew take a look at it at the next GTG.

I've got a customer with the same issue on those, and there is a loud popping noise when he moves the car at slow speed while turning, been looking for a solution besides just replacing it with a good used one.

Wow is this timely. I'm replacing it right now and was wondering the same thing.
The directions say that it will just pop into place. When I move it back and forth though, it comes unseated from the base and obviously all kinds of crap will get in there. Needs something that will keep it in the groove on the bottom of the A-arm but the one in the kit doesn't go in there and there's no new spring. I could re-use the old one but without using that groove it will just slide down again.

Its together but dont think that top boot is right. Guess for now I will shoot a couple pumps of grease in it every month or so to clean out the ball joint till someone finds a solution.

This is the part number listed on 928Intl.s catalog too. Not sure if it's available with that part number anywhere else though.

The problem with the Audi boot is the cost - circa $50 for the boot and another $6 for the split rings is outrageous. Been looking for another boot but no luck so far.
The boots from Mark are the best bet.

Ok, the boot not fitting is one thing, but the popping is going to be caused by something loose, loose on things that keep the wheels pointed in the right direction is not good.
