PET 7.1 Anyone using this ????

Porsche has done things like this, before. They will do it again. (I've had to deal with them before, on a copyright infringement issue...and they play hardball!)
My dealer insists that they are going to go after the Pet 7.1 people. Hell, for the people that allow it to update, they have their email addresses! How easy is that? My dead dog could prosecute those people....there is simply no defense. Read the copyright stuff provided with 7.1...it has "extra" stuff in there.
The music industry did it. People still buy music! Everyone is going to protect their copyrighted stuff. This stuff costs corporations lots of money to create...and then to keep updated. You think they write all that copyright stuff on things, just for the fun of it?
They have almost no sense of humor about people coping their stuff. I'm amazed that the guy that put all the 928 information together and sells it on C/D hasn't been arrested, yet. When they discover that someone has put all this information together and them is selling it for profit...the s&%# is going to hit the fan! While it would be really handy for me to have all of this information in one spot (I have most of it all in factory books), I've always been terrified of buying it....there's no way I want to be on that list!

If there's a bright side to the WSM's on CD issue, it's that Porsche --GAVE-- all the rights to the WSM's to their printer. This was revealed by PCNA when a group of us tried to buy the rights to produce the manual. So unless the printer, who no longer actually prints the manuals, decides he is 'damaged' by the WSM-on-CD sales, there isn't a lot to worry about.
Apopreciate too that I go JYD on companies that try to reuse my software products and tools without paying for the license.
On the PET issue, look at it objectively-- The only thing it's really good for is buying factory parts from them. If more people have the program and use it, parts sales should increase.

How does it work for PET: do you tick off a box saying "I agree with the terms of license" during installation of or do you need to go through the installation (and maybe first update) until you get a chance to read the copyright statement?
What do you do then if you find that the program is copyrighted and you still want to stay "legal".
I am obviously not a lawyer so I would appreciate an expert's opinion on that.

I think Greg meant IP address, not email address.
Since 1) you can buy PET on DVD from a dealer for around $50 or so and 2) usage of the program can only lead to more parts sales (as Dr. Bob already stated), I wouldn't really worry much about it. I suspect the reason why some dealers are really pissed about it is that it shows parts prices so said dealers cannot rip customers off as much on parts. Pick a part and call up 5 closest dealerships and see what the price difference is. Sometimes it is ridiculous, like 3 times as much as another.

Greg is right in that there is big difference between using paid for PDF PET CD on its own vs hacked software which directly connects to Porsche database and allows to do changes into their system.
I still think its Porsches problem and if they sue someone it should be their own software department for making so stupid mistake that anyone can get in. At least they should take PET 7.x offline immediatelly if they see it as a problem. Entire data was basically corrupt at same second first change was done. Unless Porsche keeps on rolling back changes what are done into it.
Stupidity of this entire thing has to be evident to everyone who has ever been involved in any kind of professional software project. Porsche might win in court but if they actually sue anybody they can kiss goodbye to their reputation as leading and innovative company. One arcticle about court cases in computer related magazines and everyone in business can't stop laughing. Level of this no access control mistake is such that any first year programmer student should know not to make it.

If its just local change then only problem can be that Porsche do not want to publish extra data which is available compared to PDF version. In any case if they don't want everybody and their mother to get access entire software is just plain and simple build wrong.

Please don't test the changes on a 928 record - as far as I can see there is an update call made via http to the server side off the back of the http call that fetches the information by VIN.
Would be better if that data stayed intact for a while longer.

Possibly someone can help me with this....
I'm installing on a XP Pro x86 machine, following Doc's instructions on Page 2 of this tread. However when I get to this point
"Click setup.exe and follow the prompts, don't freak out, it is in Russian, just look for the buttons with a ">" on it meaning to continue. When prompted for a checkbox check it if you want a Desktop Shortcut Icon. You will also be prompted for a Hardlock Driver install (luckily in english :-) be sure to click OK.
Once install is finished open PET with the new shortcut.
At the first pop-up window click the left button (it means back)"
First I never get the checkbox option so no shortcut on the desktop (not biggie as I know how to do that) but I never get a link/shortcut, even in the start menu, of any kind that will open the program.
Any help would be appreciated....

That would be one of the all time IT f-ups if updates are being saved back to the server.

Hi
Ok...first there is NO way that Porsche can get anyones Email address from that software....
From their Server they can or will log IP addresses that access the update database...
But to trace anyone they would have to ask your Internet provider for your name and address etc, and here in the UK, NO ISP will provide that to a commercial company...they only provide it to the Government or Police on matters of extreme importance....like child pornography or Terrorism etc...
Also there are two types of IP address.....
1. FIXED ...the household always has the same IP... allocated by the ISP (usually at extra charge)
2. DYNAMIC ...the household has an IP that changes when machines are rebooted usually....
IF Isps were going to give out info (which they wont) type 1 is easy as always the same...to give info on type 2, they would have to know an exact time and date to know where and to whom that IP was allocated...which is much more work for them......
But I repeat..... they wont track you by IP ...without the ISP`s cooperation....which they WILL NOT get...
Apart from anything else as someone mentioned , they would look REALLY REALLY stupid for allowing access....
Hope this helps....
All the best Brett

I'm on PET 7.1 update 254/30 and it comes up with a message saying "Error in last update, new update impossible! (PO)". I found that if I delete the contents of c:/PET/data/PO/update/temp it does then let me do an update, and I can download update 255. When I next start PET it installs the update and it fails.
I'm hoping that if I repeat this in a few days time there will be an update which works.
