Full size spare - which size rim to use?
Thanks to a fellow Rennlister (George you are awesome!) I now have a spare set of D90 rims for my '91 S4. Since I have spares now which size rim is better to use on either the front or rear for a spare, the 7.5 or the 9?

I stuck a 9 inch rim sans tire in my spare tire well and it stuck a good 2-3 inches above the shelf. It was a Cup 1 wheel if that makes a difference.

A full size tire will fit in the cargo area, although it will take up about 1/2 of it.
What I am really asking is the 9" too big for the front or the 7.5" too small for the rear? I guess for a short time it doesn't really make much of a difference?

If your going to put the full size spare in the rear hatch area, be sure to weld a bolt down assembly to hold it down during any accident or panic stop. You don't want it taking your head off as it continues forward at your original speed.

How often do you have a tire go flat on you?! I don't think it has EVER happened to me in any of my 928's...well, ok, that is not true. I have picked up a nail, a screw and had a bad valve stem once but NONE of them required a road side tire change!

I refrain from even thinking about flat tires while driving, and never ponder "my luck" at not having to do a roadside tire change.

If I have a spare I'll never get a flat. If I don't carry one I'm sure to get one on the first day of a 3 day weekend in Napa 100 miles from home with an angry wife.
I'd rather be prepared!

What is wrong w/ the regular spare? They actually work really well! I have seen one go about 1000 miles I think it was! I don't recommend that, but they are not bad!

I once worked with a guy that was in a habit of carrying his bowling ball in the back seat. One night he was out drinking and driving.
Long story short, when he misjudged a curve and rolled the car on the freeway, the bowling ball did a number on him. After several months of convalescent care he was back at work.
