Clarion VZ509
I'm going through a similar dilemma-want today's features with old school looks (no bling). I recently bought my first 928 with a Blaupunkt Toronto installed but quickly realized I can't live without my ipod in the car so I started searching for a replacement.
Found the pickings to be quite slim though. The CDR220 looks great but I don't like the fact that the illumination won't match with the rest of the interior lighting (white LED upgrades from Nicole) and, like you, I agree that for the money it should have more features.
I'm considering the Clarion VZ509 because it seems to be the most low-key looking unit (while closed) since it's all black and has white key illumination. From the pics online it looks like the black plastic is shinier than I'd care for but given the alternatives I guess I can't be too picky. Cheapest price I've found is eBay @ $479.79 - Bing Cashback (10% right now) = $431.81.
Any chance someone out there has this in their 928 and can provide pics?

I always liked Nak stuff! Looks good in the car too... can't believe you can get 6 discs in a single DIN slot! It is amazing what they can do these days!

Hi Infinitehalves,
I too agree with you about "old school" looks.
FYI - The Nakamichi MB units allow you to set up to 9 difference color combinations for the CD changer/Receiver illumination - red, blue, white, orange, etc.
It's very flexible, I found the color that suited me. Colors can be changed on the fly with a setting button on the front of the unit after you have installed it. Same one used to set the bass, treble, balance, fader...

I don't know, and it's just a guess, but I predict reliability problems with the mechanism long term, it just seems overly complicated.
But, I am enjoying the unit so I'll worry about it when or if it dies.

The in-dash CD changer voodoo magic is moving the read head out, adjusting the gap between the discs and moves the head back in on the new disc.

Hi Joe Taylor,
Thanks for the suggestion-the Nakamichi unit sure looks great and the 9 color illumination feature is def a huge plus. My only reservation is that I don't own any cd's (ipod only since '02) so getting a 6-disc changer seems a bit odd. Doesn't look like the unit has ipod control but since its got an aux it could still be a contender if I don't find a suitable ipod-controlling headunit. The search continues...

It's not as complicated as it sounds actually-all possible thanks to a basic wireless network setup and two invaluable pieces of technology, both made by Western Digital:
1) My Book World Edition (a user-friendly NAS with RAID so its got double protection for your files-mines got 4TB but they come in smaller capacities too)
2)WD TV Live (a little device that hooks up to your TV and allows for streaming from network so you can play your own media as well as browse media from Youtube, etc., if you don't care for the networking feature you can also just hook up an external hard drive to it filled with your movies and play them all off there or even just a basic flash drive)
Now you can understand my frustration with not having access to my music in my 928 - I've been accustomed to having easy access to a huge library of content just about everywhere. My ipod (and now iphone) would go from being played at home, to the car, and then the office (via usb on my PC) so now I've got a gap between home and work and I'm all distraught about it! Don't worry though I'll get to the bottom of this...lol

Funny, I was planning on digging these up anyway as I recall in one of them he discusses hiding radio and radar antennae in the third brake light.
