Hey. i was wondering if the transmission out of a corvette would be able to mate up to our cars. I know both are in the rear end of the car. I was jw. It just seems the our manual trannys arent that solid. Any other ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Anything is possible, but moderate amounts of money have yet to do it. People are working on transmission options, but nothing ready for public consumption AFAIK.

No, it won't fit properly...
There is the possibility that an aftermarket supplier is working on for the Corvette that may fir our cars.. I have been in contact with them, and will know more after the holidays...

the 85-up transmissions are pretty much buletproof. Only the early ones have weak synchros, other that that they are pretty sturdy too.

You can get a rolling C5 chassis for around $6000 now. That's getting pretty tempting to pick up. Part the suspension, brakes, wheels and you are left with a 345hp engine/trans for probably $4000.

If you look at the Corvette trans assy, it's about twice as big as ours....would take signifigant sheetmetal mods to the center tunnel, custom rear crossmember, axles, torque tube.. Other than that, it fits right in..

I've actually been thinking about this on and off for a while. My 84 is a perfect candidate. It's an ok car, but not super nice. I wouldn't feel bad cutting up the tunnel to make this work.

Glen,
It's not the guys in NJ who reputedly did a Tremec conversion..
It is a supplier in SOCAL, called Weissmann, and they made the Mc Laren F1 trans, and have a semi & full auto sequential shift 5 or 6 speed, DRY SUMPED Gearbox rated at 1100 lb/ft with choice of any gear ratios I wish.. Their trans setups are used in many racing applications, and several custom streetcars, as well as in the marine world. I was introduced to them through my boating contacts, as some of us keep breaking stern drives on our boats due to too much TQ. (1600+ Lb/Ft per motor)
Weissmann can do a converion for me for the 928 now, but it is upwards of $15k for the basic setup, and I don't want to spend that much as of yet, as the automatic can handle 600+ lb/ft for now..
However, they are supposed to do one for a Corvette, using their basic case, which is pretty small... If they do this, the production volume will go up, and the costs will go down.
Further, I will be scanning a 928 Auto trans into CAD to get some data points for measurement. Once this is done, I can discuss with the trans manufacturers the ease of making an adapter etc., or may be able to machine it myself as the measurements will be in CAD..
If the Corvette deal works out with Weismann, then good for928's, as the price will come down on the gearbox, and the 928 will only need a bell housing adapter.
I will also be able to ask Jericho, Richmond, (these need to be side loader instead of top loader) and other high TQ trans makers, what is possible, and if they can do something for a bit less than the 15-20k for the Weissmann box..
I can't get to this until next year, after the holidays.... I have too many things going on at the moment that need to be done...
Hope the info is helpful..
Cheers,

Weisman makes great transmissions but they are PRICEY.....when I called them for a full race sequential rated to handle 1000tlbs was $30k....
EMCO also makes excellent sequentials, but also pricey...LG motorsports sells theirs for $24.5K
http://www.lgmotorsports.com/catalog...oducts_id=2179
I would imagine it is more cost effective to make stronger internals and possible a stronger case for our transmissions....since T56's rated to handle 1200hp by RSgear, also known as tranzilla are around $5-8k http://www.rsgear.com/transzilla.asp
I would say for a "race" 928 where body mods are easy (think making a much bigger hole) a corvette transaxle would be fairly easy...but on a street car where its much harder to increase room....it gets much tougher
