I just posted the ANSWER to this HOAX on the thread where it started...

The car IS NOT a 928... It is a 968!!! They made them in '95, made a BUNCH of them, a bunch of those were 5spds AND, AND they made them in PURPLE! Bet dollars to donuts!

It was a dark garage...
The owner is NOT a Porsche guy...
The car was COVERED...
There was drinking involved...
The viewer was a 911 guy...

Not saying the viewer was not a car guy or even a GREAT guy, but to someone who is in to 911's (or any car OTHER THAN 928's or 968's) those two cars look enough alike in a dark garage being uncovered that even someone pretty good with cars could be confused.

Think about it...

Car was sitting for FIVE YEARS! How long till YOUR battery goes dead??? My '92 GTS about 1 week, my '94 GTS about 4 weeks...

ALL GTS's have digital dashes so if the battery is dead you WILL NEVER SEE THE ODO! Sounded like he actually LOOKED at the dash and SAW the numbers...

Time will tell...

You called it I think. I was just thinking to myself honestly that it would be a 968.

Heh, that would put the value through the ceiling, as the pool of collectors would include more Europeans, where cars with low mileage are extremely rare! (yes, I realise 875km's is ultra-low mileage by US standards, but even European cars with less than 50k miles are very unusual - european 928's got driven.. a lot)

If only there was an Amethyst RHD manual 94/95 GTS I could stalk..
Don't know. There was a Amethyst GTS 5M in the UK but that's the only other one I've seen. There certainly could be more as I only have the color/transmission info for US/Canada cars (Thanks again to Rixter).

Interesting theory! There certainly are Amaranth Voilet 968s out there....... Nothing a VIN and a couple snaps wouldn't clear up?

exactly... the OP didn't say they took the key out to the garage with them to turn the car "on" so to speak, but his "it has not run in 5 years" makes one think it has been sitting lonely and covered and thus would have a dead battery... in a 968 you would still be able to see the odo...not so in a GTS! Just saying...

There are at least 3 'purply' 968 colors, including one car sold to Lee Majors, the Six Million dollar man.

Nice! I bet they look great in all shades of purple! Does the $6MM man still have it? I had a 1994 coupe in Iris Blue Metallic w/ Classic Grey 6-speed a bunch of years ago. Great car, really well balanced. Would love to have another.

BTW, look your speed yellow cab!

Chuck, I know you have all the North American GTS well covered and that none of them seem to match up with this car. Looking on the Australia 928 site http://www.landsharkoz.com/htm/sc/colourbluegreen.htm with the colours listed, they note Iris Blue Pearl Clearcoat 39N as being a 928 colour for 93 - 95 (though they show an S4 in the photos). It could certainly be taken as purple given the lighting conditions.

What are your thoughts on this being a ROW car in that colour?

This car is starting to become the mystery. Although the 968 theory has merit, I'm still leaning towards it being a 928.

Laird, it could possibly be that color but not likely as it's pretty light compared to colors like midnight blue or a dark purple. I had a 1994 Iris Blue 968 and even in low light it probably wouldn't be confused with purple. There are a couple Iris Blue GTSs on this list (Dave C aka Worf928 has one).

Is this 968 Amethyst or some other purple? I thought some other name was mentioned? Based on the 2 pics they look identical. What is the color of the 993 next to it? Is that Arena Red or something?

I know this 964 is Amethyst and I fell in love with it when i saw it in person.

BMW had some awesome violets in the 90's on M cars. M3 had a Techno Violet which was darker than the European M5 which could be had in Daytona Violet.

Knowing that there are no Amethyst 5 speed GTS's in the country I think that will be the convincing argument that ill have to make my own.

Chuck, Do you have ANY contact information for the 94 Amethyst auto GTS on your site? This is one of my favorite color combos and I would love to contact the owner if there is ANY WAY of doing that. Any ideas?
