Good luck getting a law suit for something that doesn't create any safety concerns.
I know I may get flamed for this but thinking that a lawsuit is the answer to any problem in life is just wrong. It's the reason we pay too much for so many things and the only industry that benefits is the legal industry.
Its a known problem on a 20+ year old car and should be considered a part of your maintenance regime to check it frequently and take any precautions to prevent failure. Ownership cost if you will.

First I was thinking about starting out small organizing a list of Porsche 928 owners who had TBF and writting down their VIN numbers compiling a large list. Then comes on media covered protest and finally attempted legal actions.

Forget it.
There have been vehicles with this issue before that have been far more mas produced, and with a far greater failure rate right out of the box. Instead of 20+ years later. None of them have ever been successful in getting a lawsuit to pay out. The manufacture of those cars replaced the engines with the same engine. Then when warranty was up. Your SOL.

There is your first problem, a list of every 928 ever produced is not a large list, much less the 1% (or less) that have actually experienced a TBF.
Press coverage? Maybe we can get Katie Couic to stage a failure showing a 928 blowing up when the thrust bearing fails, just like the Chevy truck debacle.
The aluminum ball-joint issue is a far larger one than TBF since injury / death could occur when it fails.

I was actively involed in this subject matter 10 years or so ago when it became apparent that this phenomena was happening- I suffered a fractured drive shaft on my S4 and then found the shaft slipping after we replaced it.
The solution is simple- Loctite 270 [I think] or better still, if you have the $$$ Constantine's solution. I have used the Loctite on my S4 and on the current GTS with no problems.
The reason I raise this is that some Teutonic Git contacted us about this problem from Deutschland as he was threatening legal action. For the support we gave him he promised to report back on what happened- of course we never heard a German sausage from the SOB again.
If there was a chance of a law suit it is of course long gone but if any of you chaps over the lake have any good contacts with the USAF maybe we can collect the TBF failed engines [I have one from my GTS- TBF wrecked before I purchased the rest of the car cheapo to put my slightly modified S4 motor in] and get them to return them all to Porsche- preferably from about 40,000 feet above their factory [I was going to say their new museum but then remembered there are a couple of "real Porsches" in there]!
I still feel compelled to have a go at them just for the sake of it even though I noe the letter would go straight into file 13.

don't feel bad, i took my first-ever, ***-whipping today on rennlist... blasted for posting a harmless, semi, off-topic thread, but the REAL REASON may have been for striking a nerve with the following statement, and several other statements i've made pertaining to poor workmanship in numerous Porsche accessory and driveline components...

i was planning an LS2 swap for my 968 which i purchased with low miles 3 years ago at a premium, and i've practically broken the bank with resto-mods on this car... been here doing searches to learn more about driveline and transaxle failures with your modded 928s.
i regret not getting a 928 in the first place... i blew it.

So you've made two bad 928 purchases now.. and it has to be *someone's* fault, right?
Maybe you should go after the 928 independent specialist you paid to get a Pre Purchase Inspection done?
