New To Forum, Old To Porsche. Need Advice.
Haven't owned a Porsche since I got rid of my '70 911 over 20 years ago.
Getting the craving again and have been looking for another 911 with Tiptronic (66 year old knees.
Found this 928 on eBay and am tempted to click the buy it now button.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item414a667ced
Easy 2 hour drive to Toronto to check it out. Joined Rennlist the other day for the wealth of info here. Porsche would be summer car only, but my concern is that if I can do repairs and service by myself without going broke.
Also have a '05 Mazda6 SportWagon and '96 Benz E320, 270,000 Km, which i've kept running for 12 years without visiting a Mercedes dealer.
Been a member on Benzworld.Org for years using their DIY's to fix numerous problems.
You're thoughts????
Any advice or input welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Ron L

Welcome!
Nice looking car, sunroof delete! I have seen it for sale for a while now in TO. One thing to take into consideration is it is a Japanese spec car and cannot be imported to the US without a major hassle. That lowers the resale a bit.

I would be VERY cautious given its history. It could be a great deal or a money pit. But, since it has been for sale for awhile, it may be the later.
Do you due delligence before the sale.
Either way, good luck!

I believe that is a seller known for offering cars imported from Japan.
Proceed with maximum caution.
Actual condition, including serious problems like thrust bearing failure may be hard to pin down.
Buying through other services may be better or worse.
Easy import to Canada, illegal and tricky to sell to anybody in the US, resale value is much less.
OTOH if I was in Canada a nice low mileage Japanese car would top my list, but I think I would only do it if I knew someone in Japan I could trust with some of the inspection and paperwork.

Thanks for the quick response.
Just sent this e-mail to seller...........
"Dear motohealer,
Hey!!
Just a few questions....
No airbags???
Side marker light on fender????
Is this a Euro or Japanesse spec 928???
I'm 2 hours east of Toronto, can you send me your address so I can check it out before the bidding ends.
Thanks,
Ron L"
I'll keep you posted.
BTW, if it was a RHD Japanese spec car, it would be a keeper, like the RHD Skylines popping up all over Toronto.

All Japanese 928's are LHD for some reason, even though the RHD was offered in the UK and Australia.
Guarantee it is a Japan car given the low mileage, no sunroof and auto trans. Lots of people in Ontario have them and they can be good cars, just have to watch the deferred maintenance.

First, Welcome to Rennlist!
Search for and read the posts pertaining to "TBF" or "Thrust Bearing Failure". This can only happen to autos. It's fairly easy to check out yourself. Once you know it's good, there are a few different ways to correct this for good. If you have kept your Benz away from a dealer for this long, you should be able to handle it. We will help. If everything checks out, and it is actually as nice as the ad makes it appear, that is really a fantastic price. Have a full PPI done before even considering purchase. If they have full service records, go through them carefully. There are, however a lot of nice sharks available right now for rediculously low prices. If you can acquire an enthusiasts car that has full maintainence history, you will probably have less suprises. If you can swing the price Louie928's 91 GT, you will be a HAPPY CAMPER. Mr.Merlin also has a very nice 86.5 S for sale that is completely sorted out for sale right now...
Good Luck!!!

Ron, welcome!! I assume you are looking for an auto, so Louie's car is out, right?
Because it is being sold by a dealer?
The car looks really clean, and the engine looks good in the pic's-- nothing put back in the wrong place as far as I can tell. Just a couple of minor oddities- the center-caps are all missing from the wheels, and the two-tone carpet seems a bit odd (pic #2 in the kijiji ad). And a couple of tools are missing. But that's all pretty minor stuff.
The one thing that would turn this into a nightmare is the TBF mentioned above. What I would be inclined to do is make an offer subject to PPI and specifically that the crankshaft end-play being within factory spec. Then find a good shop that can pop the lower bellhousing cover, release the coupling and make a careful measurement. (They may need to loosen the belts in the front also, to get a good measurement).
If the seller is not hiding anything then they should agree. If they make a fuss then they are probably hiding something, and it would be time to move on and find another. And there seem to be a lot of good cars for sale right now.
But you are on the right track. If you enjoy driving, and like working on well-engineered cars then you will love the 928, and you've come to the right place.

Also my wife would be pissed off if I bought a stickshift.
If I get a hold of the seller i'll drive to Toronto and give the 928 a thorough inspection.

Dear xlimodriver,
Hi,
NO air bags,
Euro spec that I imported from Japan.
You can see it at 175 Toryork Drive, Unit 56 in Toronto - but please call me on my cell at 647-284-7660 and give me 1 day notice so I make sure I am at my shop with my 928
