Default turbo?

what turbo mods are out there for a 90 GT. would prefer to find one that is a DYI.
Is there such a thing as a belt driven turbo or are all turbos exhaust driven?
maybe a chipset would do me fine? I dont know what would give my car the best bang-for-buck increases.

You're asking if there is such thing as a belt driven turbocharger and yet you want to "DYI" yourself a turbo setup? Scary.

You Must Know, this is my first 'toy', sports car, nice car with POWER.
My usual ride is a $500 beeater that is at the end of its life span. Im not a mechanic. my bother is a great wrench with motors and suggested something. so everytime we hook up, he offers to help with the build. So, in short, I'm just asking what would be the biggest bang for my buck? what mod would give the best look to my car?

Chipset?
turbo?
supercharger?

Belt driven = supercharger

Turbo is via exhaust. I'm thinking you need to a pile more reading.

Biggest absolute bang is the Kuhn Performance Technologies twin turbo.

Regardless, if you want bang, its gonna be a lot of bucks.

Kuhn's twin turbo setup is pretty sweet, but it is pretty pricey and does require some permanent modifications to the car. I believe you have to cut a couple of holes.

There are at least 3 good supercharger options. Murph's kit has been around for a while now and is very well sorted. Many Murph kits are running over 500 RWHP. DR and Carl also have great supercharger options. These are also wicked fast.

But, before you do any of this, you need to focus on the basics.

The best upgrade you can do for your 20 year old supercar is to get it running like it was when new. That means getting all mechanical systems in like new working condition. After you have done that, then look at adding power. Any other way and you are asking for trouble. Bolting on a couple of hundred extra horsepower will quickly amplify any existing problems, and after the supercharger is on it becomes another variable to sort out.

It takes time and money, and be willing to part with both. I am still working on step one. It is taking me a little longer than expected, but it will be worth the wait.

Start with the FAQ's.

Make your car 100% right before you start with mods, that is your best bang for the buck.

There are two kind of folks that own and drive 928's, folks with deep pockets and folks that learn how to work on them.

Just because some one is a good wrench only give them the basics of what they need for keeping a 928.

I wish you all the luck in the world.

Best bang for your buck? Nitrous oxide without a doubt.

I agree w/ Canuck928... best bang for buck is NO... the "scary" comment was in reference to you not knowing that a turbo is ALWAYS exhaust driven and a Supercharger is ALWAYS belt (or gear I suppose) driven... then you follow that up with DIY! SERIOUSLY..that is scary! That is kind of like saying, "I have never flown a plane before, but I think I am going to go buy one and fly it back to my nearest airport!" OMG!

Another option not mentioned is the rear mounted Turbo kits... 928Turbosports.com I think is where you can find that if I am not mistaken. Seen it running VERY WELL on an '86.5...scary fast!

I have a DIY superchager on mine and Kosmo Kramer (Ted) will have a Fast kit on his soon too. If you really want to discuss this, let me know and we'll set something up butj you do need to know how to turn a wrench and it is not cheap.

I saw you car at the Niagara run and it is a very nice one. Why not keep it the way it is for another season, to get to know it, before starting on any heavy modifications?

I did, and WOW. He didn't budge from his originally estimated price that's for sure. It's a very nice product but man, that price makes it the most expensive HP/$ setups you can get. Saying that you can't put a price on quality is a bad marketing theory. Value is what most people want.
