Default I finally have my 1979 928!

Well I bought the 928 for 2k.

The good
The interior is is awesome shape.
New BF Goodrich tires on Turbo Twist rims.
I have a rear deak lid for the rusted on.
Has headers!
Lowered suspension.
All hoses and vacum lines replaced

The bad

Syncros. I can buy a 85 tranny and it bolts in right?
replaced battery, alternator gone....she' dead and I pushed her home!
Needs paint in a bad way and bumper has a crack from hitting something, a few rust spots by rear window, no biggie.
When I did drive it it seemed to be down on power, way down. The car will rev thru the rpm but it feels like something is holding it back. Almost like the brakes are on, but I don't think so.
Getting a noise, like a clunking sound, almost like a exhaust leak but it seems to be coming from the front of the motor. Balancer? Fan? Almost looks like a wobble exists. There are no oil leaks. Fan belt is shot
Smells rich or like gas....eating gas fast! I lost a 1/4 tank in about 15 miles it seemed Faulty gauge? but it seems to respond to fuel being put in etc.
Sat for six months

That seems to be the long and short of it off the top of my head. I will post pic's when I can but the forum won't let me at present time, something about a security token

All and all I am pleased with the purchase! I was really excited about seeing the headers when I got under her to look for cats, no cats just looks like it has a resonator of some sort. Then I was bumming when I realized that it wasn't the cat's causing a loss of power, maybe resonator. It will go, I will put a muffler of sorts( Dynomax bullit maybe) and then the rear muffler will be taken off.

Thought, advice?

Stephen

You are lucky it didn't catch on fire.

Pull the air cleaner and look at the fuel hoses. If you're actually losing gas it could be at the rear of the motor (BAD!) or at the fuel tank/accumulator in the rear of the car (still bad, but probably not as much imminent fire danger). If it is just a strong gas smell and there is no actual fuel leak then there is a charcoal canister in the right front fender, behind the rear wheel well cover. The canister hoses go into a plastic coupler that is prone to failure and can be the source of strong fuel smells from the front of the car.

Pictures are coming as I have a security token page comes up after I try to upload. It tells me to contact the Admin and I have. I believe I wrote that in the 1st post. I am surprised as you all usually don't miss anything....your awesome!

Thanks for your advice and I will look into it.

I haven't seen any gas leaks and will will look but it isn't that strong more like it is coming out of the tail pipe.

More to come....Thanks again

Stephen

Welcome to life with sharks.

I suggest a thorough inspection by someone knowledgable in the 928 to do a safety check and lay out some kind of priority for repairs. Do a compression check etc. and get a baseline of the cars condition.

Normally I like to see old fuel flushed, but since its already been started I'd go ahead and run it a couple more times up to full operating temperature, then drain and replace all fluids.

While your poking around and taking pictures, might as well check all the numbers, VIN on passenger fender and driver door jam, Motor ID, trans ID, option codes under the carpet above the gas tank, and manufacturing date code on the tires.

I thought option codes under the mat started later, in the mid eighties. My '79 doesn't have that.

Good job, stay safe, have fun.
They don't have to be perfect to drive and have a lot of fun with.

I would be happy to look at it for you I am in Tampa, but driving it might be risky with the fuel leak. I have a lift, and a diminishing amount of dangerous knowledge.
