TRW here in the US used to do the iron plating for GM- don't know if they still can, or will, do it again. They did the pistons for the Vega and the 495 in Can-Am engines. Long time ago- there may not even be anyone at TRW who remembers any of that!

I can understand Greg and others getting pretty dirty about failed engines that they didn't cause but have to pay for. I certainly don't condone Mahle's attitude and this won't help their reputation any that is for sure. You know I am pretty happy I haven't got to put my engines together as there has been developments that I have learned from and I have also gained further education as to successful engine building. So there has been definite advantages to going slowly.
My approach to this given my circumstances and those circumstances include being in Australia with no access to Nicasil. One engine has a bore of 4.061" and the other has 4.1". So I figure if my coating doesn't work I will try and salvage the situation by then either trying another coating or send the block to the States. By doing the smaller bore first I have these options.
I have spoken to a coater in Europe and will open an account and send them enough work to make it worthwhile for them dealing with me and giving trade pricing. They have been very honest with me, they have told me about their successes and failures. They said things are getting nailed down better these days. A lot of their work was with the racing industry and they are a major engine coater of F1 parts although of late some teams can do this themselves.
Now as to the piston coating I am going first with the chrome nitride, this has chemical adhesion properties. So my knowledge of the failures is that the coating comes off, or wears away. Well I believe that chroming should be good as it is similar to the oem coating. It also can get in the rings grooves which on 2618 pistons should add to durability.
The option is then to put DLC on the skirts, this has potential plusses and minuses, if it stays on, they will last a very long time and have low low friction but if it comes off, well diamond razor blades everywhere. I will have to see how this has been going as F1 pistons are coated and some Nascar guys have at least talked about it, whether the teams will say what that are doing is another thing.
Or put the Swain PC-9 coating over the chrome nitride, this is probably the least risky strategy as PC-9 is a very tough coating with a reputation for working with the Alusil bores. Monotoring the oil with sampling would be a good idea from time to time.
