I've always had the radio and HVAC head out by removing the centre console.............is there a method to remove both without disturbing the CC?

I know this will come across bad, why would you remove the CC? You can pull all of that w/o messing with the CC. About the only thing you need to remove on the CC is the side panel so you can undo the rear radio mount.

Just pull the trim from around the head unit, the vent, and the trim ring if your stereo has one. Undo the 6 screws for the head unit and the warning unit. Pull them out and they are out of the way.

The stereo should only be held in by the bracket it fits in to and the rear of it might be held down by a nut/bolt. Depending if anyone has been in there before.

Sean............its a matter of only having done it one way previous and possesing somewhat 2XL hands.

I have a new a/c relay to install and want to upgrade the radio as part of my 'winter projects'.

It is much easier to do when you have small hands. You should be ok, it's not that bad. Take the passenger side panel off so you can get to the back of the radio. Less chance of messing up wires.

Should add that now I've a somewhat functioning a/c system I shall be putting the HVAC vac. lines back to stock..............kinda need some heat up here at times

+1 on what Sean said. Fairly easy to remove these without removing the CC. If you take a look at this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...re-w-pics.html and go to post #7, there are some pics of how to remove the head unit. Earlier in the thread are some pics of removing the trays and side panels as Sean states.

Doesn't that just involve cutting the tie wraps you have holding the heater control valve shut? It does down here.

The trim around the HVAC head is easy to break if it is old. Don't deform it too much when you take it out to get to the 6 little freekin' screws and their six little freekin' washers.

The good news is that it is a cheap part ~$12. The bad news is I bet PAG only has them in black.

When I see photos of people changing the position of the HVAC unit, almost changing the order in which the various things are ordered, is this easy to do?
In theory, could I swap the position of the radio with the HVAC?

i never pull the CC. Malcolm, radios have crappy release mechanisms and some have bend-tabs. Be careful, look first

+1 on above removal comments. Magnetize a Phillips screwdriver and the retaining screws and washers are easy to remove AND install.

Not sure if I should start a new thread but I want to replace the radio/cd player with remote 8 cd changer.

Like the changer for range of choice; dont need a lot of radio and would like to retain the OEM speakers. The new unit cant have too small controls; real man hands here

Forget the 8 CD changer Malcolm and just go for a unit where you can plug in a USB stick, SD card or an iPod. Even if the head unit requires an interface box for an iPod (the newer ones don't) that's a lot easier than installing a changer and gives you a lot more choice.

Alternatively fit a head unit that plays CDs with tracks encoded as mp3 or the AAC format. That way you can just burn CDs from your computer. You will be able to fit 10 albums onto 1 CD using very high quality encoding. So if you have a little wallet of 10 CDs you are carrying 100 albums.
