Hi
I believe you, maybe its because yours is a 32v......I have driven a lot more 16v than 32....
My oil pressure did drop once when I put in 0-40 oil and it dropped to just under 4....so I instantly drained it and put back in my normal 15/50...
My pressure has run at 5 at idle for nearly 5 years now so no appreciable problem.....and as every 928 I have driven has been the same, I just (maybe incorrectly) assumed it was normal....
Maybe we should start a poll on pressures...if nobody has done it by then , I will set one up tonight when back from work...

You cannot simply accept the fact that your data is incorrect and your car has something goofy going on (most likely the gauge and / or sender). You are out to prove every 16V 928 (at least in the UK) has 5 bar of oil pressure at idle.
As for a poll, so a search:

He's talking about 16V 928's. Not GT's like yours with the same rod / crank bearings, same connecting rod clearances, same oil pressure relief valve, same oil filter, same pump.........
The oil pickup is different....that must be it

All this for a 1/4 bar change, love this forum!
For me I'm a believer the proof is in the pictures, now I feel a lot better when stuck in traffic; by the way it's been in the 90's lately.

as ive reported before, going from mobil 1 to redline or amsoil, in extreme racing environements, (i.e. oil temps in the 230 to 250F range) oil pressure with mobil 1 was very low, near 2bar, and in corners, the warning light would come on. with amsoil, 4 bar minimum, even in a very high G left turn, and 5 bar above 3500rpm, ALWAYS. I think this is important, some may not.
by the way, dyno oil valvoline racing oil, saw the same problem, and a quick change to amsoil changed the pressure value performance.

If you use straight 80 weight, you will always be at 5 bar.
I'm with you on this one Greg.

Does Brett have different English Bars than others?
Is there like a metric/SAE conversion.
An OB, a S and a GT walk into a Bar . . .

The OB stumbles and fails to cross the threshold. The S makes it through but slips on its own oil. The GT steals all the booze and takes it to his friends....The S4's. As the GTS watches with pride.

My old S2 (4.7 16v) was 5 bar at cold idle, 3 bar at hot idle, once saw 2 bar hot idle on a very hot track day at the end of a session.
My current 79 was exactly the same with the original 4.5 motor: 5 bar at cold idle, 3 bar at hot idle rising to 5 bar above 2000rpm. Now that it has a 4.7 S2 engine I saw 1-2 bar at hot idle using 10/40 running-in oil on a hot day. Having changed the oil to Valvoline 20-50 I now see 3 bar at hot idle.
Brett if you're seeing 5 bar at hot idle you have a broken oil pressure sender or a bad earth on the guage.

Brett,
My first 928 - an 87 S4 - had the oil pressure at 5 bar from start to shut off, regardless of engine temp. Then - I replaced the oil sender above the filter, and it started reading 5 bar at start, 5 bar for hot engine above ~2500 rpm, and ~2 bar at idle hot. This was with Mobil 1 15W50 oil.
All 5 subsequent cars have had the same 5 bar cold idle, 2 bar hot idle, 5 bar at ~2800 rpm oil pressures ('88-'94 MY's) with the same oil brand and viscosity.
Perhaps some/many of the cars you have driven have a faulty sender - it's not uncommon - at least on this side of the pond!!
