Hi
I believe you, maybe its because yours is a 32v......I have driven a lot more 16v than 32....
My oil pressure did drop once when I put in 0-40 oil and it dropped to just under 4....so I instantly drained it and put back in my normal 15/50...
My pressure has run at 5 at idle for nearly 5 years now so no appreciable problem.....and as every 928 I have driven has been the same, I just (maybe incorrectly) assumed it was normal....
Maybe we should start a poll on pressures...if nobody has done it by then , I will set one up tonight when back from work...
All the best Brett

You are uninformed, sir. Sounds like you have a faulty oil pressure gauge, leading you to the incorrect assumption that yours is correct and all others are faulty.

Hi
Sometimes I wonder why I bother with this list with so many puerile people on it...
It was a straight technical query from me.....
I am NOT A LIAR.....
Ignoring any other 928s....both mine and my brothers read the same....

Brett, you are wrong! My friend's 16V '84 idled hot at 3 bar. So did my former '86. My GT hot idle is 2 bar. 5 bar at hot idle is not normal. No one is calling you a liar, we are just saying you are incorrect. Both your and your brother's car must be having problems with the pressure sender and/or gauge.

I do not see where anyone (including myself) called you a liar.
I have no doubt your car reads 5bar at idle when warm....THAT MEANS SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR CAR!!!!
Stop being such a damn drama queen.

Put a mechanical pressure gauge on it, you will see this for your self.

Brett, there will be something wrong with your engine or gauge in the car, that oil pressure is literally off the scale. A Nascar engine uses that type of oil pressure at 8,500 rpm and producing 850 hp so you certainly don't need it or want it at idle in your 928.
Maybe have a look at your sender, make sure there is no wires partially earthing and lots of senders leak, if so just change that for a new one, then see what is going on. If it is still high you really need some proper electrical tools to test the gauge next and then move into the oil pressure springs etc, I am presuming you have changed the filter and it is not blocked etc. It is something that needs to be investigated as effectively you are driving without a oil pressure gauge.

Hi
I have driven many 928s in the UK, AND ALWAYS the pressure is between 4 and 5 bar at hot idle...and increases to 5 plus as soon as I pull away or increase the revs.....
A technical reason might be nice for an answer instead of implying I am lying.....which I am NOT !

A simple unscrewing of the connectors, cleaning and doing them back up fixed the issue. The rubber caps that cover them act like buckets for moisture as they face the wrong way - I think your observed pressures are just due to poor contact on the sender.
I also think many cars in wet climates get oil pressure senders replaced too often
The sender is just next to the oil filter.

If the oil pressure is high at the sensor close to the oil pump outlet, I would suspect that oil is NOT flowing to the top of the motor due to some excessive restriction.

Hi
Hmmm.....I have noticed before American 928 owners mentioning oil pressure at 2 bar ish....
I and all other UK 928 owners would be horrified if our pressure dropped that far....
Why do UK cars run at around 5 bar (hot idle) ???
Not just mine by the way , but all of them.....
For oil I use Full synthetic 15/50 by the way....

Usually there's a genuine reason why UK vs US figures differ: Octane figures are different, Gallons are different, but bar is bar which ever side of the pond.
My car's hot idle used to be a lot lower that 2 bar, until I changed to Penrite HPR15, now it's about 2 like everyone else bar Brett (excuse the pun).
