Default Rear Hub no good?

I dropped my rear hub assembly off to the local recommended Porsche garage to install a new rear wheel bearing since I do not have a press. I got a call this morining from the service guy stating the hub is worn out and needs to be replaced. Is this common? There was alot of play in this assembly but I figured it was because of the toasted wheel bearing? Also isn't there suppose to be some play in the hub assembly until the half shafs are tighten down? Trying to figure out my options at this point. Can I get a good used hub or is new the only route? Probably big $$$$.. great already way over budget on this build!!

If I understood him correct: he says the spindle is whats worn there is clearance between the race and spindle.

I have a set with 49k miles (or so...) on them. Let me know what they are worth to you, and they are yours. Good luck!

Do you have any pictures of them? 49k miles guessing the car was wrecked? Are the wheel bearings good in it already? Send me a email at dan87951 at gmail dot com if you want to discuss of list.

No way for him to check hub to bearing slop until the stub axle is installed and the nut on the end is tightened. In fact, if he used the press to install the hub and did not correctly support the inner half of the inner bearing with a sleeve, there's a big chance the ball bearing is damaged.

Bob,

From my understanding he has not even started disassembling anything. Do you have a few minutes? Maybe you can call them to clear a few things up? When I spoke with them he understood that the bearing will have slop on the spindle since it is not loaded until that axel nut is installed. I don't understand exactly what he was saying about there being slop between the race and spindle. If thats the case wouldn't the spindle fall right out? I might just pick the parts up and not have them do the work.

Nope he never even tried to sell me one. Just stated I need a new/different one as this one is worn. Gave me a few numbers to some wrecking yards and that was that.

I think a second opinion is in order..........
Put it this way unless the wheel was wobbling around as you drove and the bearing is rattling around the housing the press operator isnt familiar with the 928 hub.
That said the bearing can be removed with some Mapp gas torch heating, and the inner race will have to be cut off with a grinder from the hub flange

FWIW I dont recall ever seeing a damaged hub flange or hub carrier

Having just done this on my 79.. I'm having a hard time visualizing what could be worn on the spindle let alone the aluminum hub. I'd follow the above advice and get a secodn opinion... by the way.. when I took mine out I basically removed the bearing ball by ball and then cut the remainder of the old bearing off with a dremel tool cutoff wheel. If that worked for me and the car drives fantastic... I'd love to know what he's referring to...

This is probably my 4th shop. No one wants to work on it. I might just chalk it up and do it myself as this is getting nuts. Of course when you call them to ask if they can do a rear wheel bearing on a 928 "sure no problem". When you bring in just the hub they see the dollar signs dissapear..

We did have an issue in 2008 when I noticed some weird noises coming from the driver side rear wheel. When I got home I noticed the nut that was suppose to be troqued to like 250lb+ ( don't know exact spec right now) was finger tight. I re-tighten the nut and we were good to go. Since im in the middle of a torque tube I figured I would change out the rear wheel bearings. Could this have caused the damage he is referring to?

Just picked up the hub assembly from the machine shop. It showed me where its bad. The spindle shaft that goes in the bearing is not tight on the back part and actually has some metal worn away. I didnt notice this at first. I will post some pictures here soon for you to see.
