WaaHoo we are now a 2 shark family!!
Hi all,
About a week after my first post (been around, just new to this posting thing), a friend called and asked if my Dinan M3 was for sale. It wasn't but I thought how cool it would be to have a 928 for a DD again, I have the 86.5 project, that I want to take my time and make nice, and I love driving the M3 BUT.... That day on Craigslist I found an '87 S4 5 spd (a must for me), close to home, looked decent, and on the cheap side (two teenagers don't leave alot $$ for car funds). Went to check it out and gave him a deposit.
It is marine blue (love the color) with blue partial leather. Not many options, rear A/C, sunroof, (no LSD, boo) but did I mention it is a 5 spd!! Paint is decent but mostly orignal , interior is very nice except for the usual dash/pod cracks and the driver seat need one panel replaced. Not a big deal as we have an upholstery shop I deal with at work that has done pods and dashes before. It has real 996 Turbo hollow spokes and a RMB. I appear to be the 5th owner. It has service records since 1992 and has been here in the Bay Area since that time. Within the last 13K miles it has had timing belt/water pump, V/C gaskets, clutch, rack, ball joints, tie rods, front shocks. From the service records it looks like the previous owners cared about this one. I am going to replace the belt and pump as they are 5 years old. I removed a cover and the belt shows no cracks but it is cheap insurance. It, of course, needs a few things but overall is a really nice car. Perfect driver. The PO said the A/C did not work well. I know this will shock you all but the heater valve was stuck open. I zip-tied to test and the A/C blows ice cold. He also gave me about $1K in parts plus the original wheels. So I am off to a good start. It really needs rear shocks and the fronts, although new are very soft, so it looks like Bilstein/Eibach time.
The flappy was not working due to a fautly check valve (blue/black at booster), so it is speedier than wehn I picked it up. I have already intalled a short shifter and replaced the disco shift **** with the stock piece with new boot. Much better now.
I have to decide which way to go one the intake/valve covers as they look like hell. I may try to apint first after seeing Chuck's (and a few others) work on his GTS. I had powder coat the parts on my '90 S4 and it still loks perfect after 15K miles but it's expensive.
I also need to drop the nose just a bit and get it aligned. It is sitting at 168 right now, so I will bring it down to 155-160. The front is has about an 1/8th toe out and the left front has zero camber, the right as -1.1. With the soft shocks and the alignment this way it darts around if the road is not smooth.
It has been almost three years since I had a 928 as a daily driver. Damn, I really love driving these cars!!!

Very nice, looks like a nice driver.
If the belt looks good and the waterpump too, I personally, would leave them alone. I wouldn't really want to intorduce another unknown and they are only 13K old. I'm not a big beleiver of replacing them just because they are 5 years old.

Excellent, Paul. We have some other owners in Sonoma. I dont know if you've met Dave Benson or James Heisey. We should get together for some group wrenching sometime.

Thanks guys,
Imre,
I have been racking my brain on the belt. I know the risk but it looks perfect. I hate fixing something that isn't broken, especially with all the recent water pump issues everyone seems to be having.
James,
As soon as I'm done with this, I am ordering a calendar and DVD. Thanks for all your hard work. I have been into these cars for years and it's so nice to see things like this. It's easy if your a 911 guy (I love those too) but you never find any cool 928 stuff.
Bill,
Yes I have known James and Dave for years. My wife and I met you at that short lived 928 place in Vallejo, I think in 2006. Probably at a few Devek events too.
I would love to get together and work on the cars. I am usually around. I know I will be doing shocks sometime soon.

Paul: Ah, yes. Keep me posted on your wrenching. I get together with Dave & James every couple of months to do something or another on one of Dave's cars.
