Default Got the "field car" on the road!

This car, and '89 S4 auto, sat in a field for at least 2 years. Ted (Kosmo Kramer) found it but after having a good look at it, decided that it was too much of a project and I agree it really would have been for normal DIY enthusiast. This is when he decided to let me have a crack it it. At the begining of the month my brother and I, dragged it home and the fun started.

Finally today got the beast sorted out enough to get temp plates for it. Took her for a nice ride around the city to get the rotors polised up. They actually almost look normal, another day or two of driving and it will be as if it never had any rust. So far everything looks good. In the last two weeks I did the following:

Check the timing belt.
Checked half the fuses (there is over 50 in there)
Refilled the trans (added a couple litres)
Re routed the two replacement spark plug wires that the field mice used for lunch
Charged the AC.... we'll see if it holds.
Hammered out the dent in the passager fender (Ministry of natural resources backed into it). Just need a skim of filler and a respray (it's black so this will be easy).
Replaced the battery, MAF, and power washed the engine.
Changed the front wipers and cleaned the trunk.
Had my neighbour clean the paint up (he's realy good at this stuff), will be waxed once it passes safety.

Here's the kicker: at the MTO, even though the used vehicle package shows no value and we have a legit bill of sale. They still want an apreasal because the car is over 20 years old. And only then, they will let the ownership get transleffed BUT, only after the PST (7%) is payed based upon the apraisal value. How ****ed up is that?!?!?!

I can't beleive how smooth it still is, even though it has 350K kms and feels like it sitll has all of it's 315hp. There are still numerous small things that need to be addressed but the main thing was to get it road worthy.

I have a pretty good feeling it will pass the emission test, the exhaust smells good, but we'll see in a few days.

Overall I'm very pleased with what my brother got for only $3800. This will be my youngest brother's first Porsche and I don't think he can go wrong with this one.

I'l post pics once I take some.

congradulations just make sure you get that car in your name before they bring that harmonized tax in January then you will be paying 14% on the apraised value you will have to bring the clan down to London for a visit or visa versa

Nice save!

Yep, its a **** about the tax.

Here, we have to pay stamp duty on the transfer of ownership of a vehicle at 3%, and its based on the higher of the transaction value, or the book value according to the price guides insurance companies use.

I know of at least one 928 owner who got a friendly letter from the transport authority requesting more tax for his '88 S4 purchase because he didn't pay enough for the vehicle when he bought it, and their experts disagreed with his valuation.

He paid up as the cost of arguing was greater than the difference in taxes

Way to go Imre! And I wanted to part it out!

I hear ya on the taxes, when I drove my 85 home from Mississauga they wouldn't even give me a temporary permit without the appraisal. I ended up borrowing a dealer plate from a friend. What a bull$hit system, if you buy a 20 yr old car for like $100, you have to buy a $50 appraisal to get it on the road, kinda defeats the purpose. You can use this guy for the appraisal, he is good and he will set the value to what you paid or less, whatever you want. You can also use him to appraise it for special interest insurance through Silver Wheels if your brother goes that way.

Rod,

I’m still holding on to that belly pan for your 928. Come over when ever you have time for it and I’ll get my brother over with his car too.

Ted,

I have a buddy that will do the appraisal for free, so that’s set but still all this is a pisser. We didn’t have a problem getting a temp plate as the ownership still is on the PO name, it will be transferred in the next 10 days. The interesting part is that a few years ago, when my brother bought his ’70 Benz, no one at the MTO said anything about an appraisal but this was at the Kitchener MTO. Maybe the one in Cambridge had different interpretation of the rules…….I don’t know.

Where did you get the ATF treatment from?

Pioneer Transmission on Fairway road in Kitchener. It is only a few blocks from my house if you want me to pick a can up for you. I think it is around $16 bucks or so.

I know exactly where that is, however, I would greatly apreciate it if you could pick up one for me.

Interesting enough, I remember seeing this S4 when I used to live in Kichener for years. Every Friday night, on the way to the local watering hole, used to drive by it, I already had my '85 by then but this car, back in the day, looked sooooo nice!!! I've confirmed this with the owner. Small world isn't it?
