Default Holbert Race car Dissasembly and chassis transfer thread

In planning on taking the next step, the 1st one is clear. I have to get the engine and transmission out of the car. any ideas on how, considering the engine cant come out through the top, and even downward might be a problem. I need the jaws of life to pull apart the shock towers. any ideas as how do do this? I did it once before, but I kind of forgot how to do it. I think you just remove the steering rack and then the cross member bolts to the chassis and the entire structure with motor mounts drops down. Ill probably take off the clutch first just to make it a little easier, or should I drop it all in one swoop?

put blocks under the cross member and undo all the bolts for the cross member engine etc and lower it onto the blocks, then go to the rear and do the same thing. Then just lift the shell off of it. This will be the easiest way.

What Colin said, a few (8 guys) and you can lift off the chassis or better yet a lift will make this easier

8 guys, I have done it with 4 without issues.

Also drop the fuel tank while you are in there.

Let me try to explain this in simple terms. This car had some historic value to it. So you proceeded to *** rape and gut it like a South African farm wife. The body is scrap at this point. Here's the method I suggest.

Just drain the gas first.

Harbor Freight has some cheap hydraulic stuff, porta power type things up to body shop frame tools.

Starting with the fuel tank sounds smart.

When that is done maybe look at separating the whole drive train from the body and lifting the body off.

Mark,

Go to Northern Tool (or Harbor Freight , yuk) and buy you a chinese version of a Hi-Lift Farm Jack (or spend $30 more and get the real thing). You can use it to carefully spread the areas you need to so you can get the motor out without cutting or permanent damage to the chassis.

Prices start around $50 for one with a 3.5 ton with a 4.5" to 47" spreading range..

Mark, the hydraulic porta powers is probably the best way, then the plasma. The "Victor" wrench will most likely be messy.

You can even rent porta powers from rental companies.

Get a tiger saw and chop away. Will help a lot when getting the cage out of the car as well.

Quite frankly, just the thought of Mark using ANY Power Tools is a little scary for some reason :-)

Maybe the first question should be, 'Mark, how many cars do you see?'

Hope all is well and good luck on the swap. The next car should be nicknamed the 'Phoenix'.

I would do the rear first, because the whole assembly can more easily pivot on the motor mounts up front. Not so in the rear. Just my opinion

There is a guy on the 951-list who has parted more cars in his driveway than most and IIRC he is in the Bay are.

Lart951 - do a search for him here on Rennlist.
