Just think, car payment, renewal fee, and insurance all due about the same time. I'm curious what deals dealers will be willing to make in say November/December trying to get rid of this year's inventory. Not many will be buying new cars any time soon.

I cant believe some people would have turned in good cars like that as a clunker. Considering all the crap those engines put into the air from those chemicals...yeah thanks for helping the environment. Absolute lunacy.

690,000 cars traded in, ZERO they can resell, this could have a wild ripple into the used car market.

Junkyards are complaining there is little value left in the cars, no motor, and no way to test the transmission.

Don't forget the charity factor either. Lots of single mothers out there who bust their *** trying to make it. Many won't be able to afford that car that was donated to charity because it was destroyed........

I'm not really political, but I was just thinking that for $3 billion we could have retired 535 politicians from congress instead of 690,000 cars and made some real progress.

Never in my life have I considered machinery living and breathing beings until I saw those videos. The sick part of it was, I'm sure there was a lot of dedication of blood, sweat and tears that went into making these cars. Now all that hard work is destroyed.

God Damn Liberals and Democrats that actually think people would benefit driving some new piece of **** Prius around after destroying a car that still had a tight motor, well-functioning transmission and possibly would have given a poor person the right to driving something without having to take the bus.

Are we still in America? If I ever have someone ask me why I never clunked my "old Porsche," they'll be walking away with 3 shoes; 2 on their feet and one stuck in their ***.

instead of trashing vehicles that are still good, for the sake of creating, or continuing car production. Why not attack the real problem which is the cost of manufacturing said vehicles. increased cost due to unions, federal regulations and health insurance cost, which is an industry with it's own waste and runnaway costs.
as for the governments cash for clunkers, it was a good idea that has merit, but was poorly implemented and not enough thought was put into it before implementation.......
as for you don s. you suffer from what I refer to as the brainwashed tunnel vision syndrome........sad!

Somebody listens to Quinn in the morning!

And they want to run Health Care too, so when you and I become "clunkers" they can "disable" us completely with a nice tasty solution.
"I'm sorry old man, but you're emitting too much polution into the ozone. Please drink this and count bacwards from 10......."

I DIDN'T VOTE THEM IN!!

Please leave the partisan rhetoric in OT, I'd like to see this thread collect some facts, and when all is known we can lay the blame at the feet of those most responsible.

Its posted here instead of OT because I am sure OT has its own hot mud throwing thread already, and the 928 is the only Porsche realistically that might have been clunked, so its personal for 928 owners.

Nobody forced these people to turn their cars in. Why begrudge someone who can get an incentive for a piece of junk that couldn't be sold or traded for anything close to $4500, esp. if...

1. Not everyone can turn a clunker into a concours car
2. It's a hassle to do private sales (and who would buy a clunker for above market value)
3. It would be nice to have a shiny new car with no mech issues, a warranty, and the latest performance and safety features (think of the children!)

But I suppose neocons are against this because it means being pro-choice. Maybe this incentive should've been couched as a tax cut, and they would've been OK with it.

The problem is with their English language skills...
Webster defines "Clunker" as:

1: an old or badly working piece of machinery ; especially : a dilapidated automobile.

Maybe they should change the definition to reliable vehicle that has been running correctly for at least a year.

At least it explains their confusion between the definition of "Healthcare" and "Welfare"

Personally I would prefer non car "nuts" to be issued bicycles to make up for all the premium/race gas I burn.
