A car caught fire locally and burned to the ground while it was being disabled. I'm sure the emissions of that outweighed the net effect of getting it off the road by oh, say.......100,000x.

Somebody pointed out in one of the blogs I read, that 500,000 or more decent running serviceable vehicles were destroyed that could have provided jobs and service for years in other countries.

This program is likely to look worse and worse as more detail comes out. As soon as I found out mostly trucks were being turned in it started looking dumb to me. Pickup trucks are work vehicles.

WTF, they could have at least removed the turbos before doing that...

Olds Aurora....beautiful Nascar based all aluminum v8, Sil had one, awesome car.

Due to the time constraints very few cars had parts pulled straight to the smasher...its terrible. The waste is indescribable.

Part of the "bad idea" was that the seller is supposed to get gov cash PLUS salvage value, so dealers had ZERO incentive to look for increased salvage value via normal auction channels and parts dismantlers. I wonder what percentage ends up going straight to the metal recovery?

A C4 corvette like that is a clunker? How much further from a clunker can you get? I bet this is an auto manufacturer's dream come true. Design and sell cars, and in 10 years produce a mechanism where they suddenly disappear from existence so everyone must buy new cars again. The perfect business plan includes a product that most need and has a finite life at the end of which it must be disposed of. How sad.

WTF, who clunks a C4 Vette? A running C4 should grab $3500-4500 easy with a private sale, heck I have seen a few non running C4's go for $4k............this is depressing to watch.

We as a country have lost our minds.

How many public works / community services could of used good trucks and vans for FREE ? Way too many uses for these that would of SAVED tax dollars...not cost. Just for better gas mileage??? I call BS! It costs a lot more in fuel to build new than run old! Oh...and lets not forget the air pollution each and every seizing motor produces!

Jes.....This is so stupid it should be criminal. I can't believe half what is happening now days. God help us.

Destroying capital is never a good idea. Go chuck a rock through your neighbors window....that too "stimulates" the economy . Sad thing is all us taxpayers on on the hook for that "cash".

One year from now all those people that bought cars are going to be complaining about the huge renewal fees that will be due. My 928 is cheap to renew.

No way, most will have the car repo'ed in less than a year.

I only watched one video and it made me queasy, that green pre puke feeling. It's just wrong.
