The good the bad and the ugly;
First, the race weekend started off with a lot of great racing. Brian already mentioned the first race. I got stacked up at the start behind the viper, and a couple of cars got by. finally, caught up to randy in the camaro, passed him and actually caught the 700hp griggs mustang, who's trannie broke and only had 4th gear. we battled for awhile and then he figured out how to make his near ave hp work, as the cars aero and brakes allow him to get back in front down the carocel. Caught up to the viper and had a great race with it, and on the final lap, made a run for the finish, scot was getting lapped and just lost (not in class though) to the viper at the checker by .005 seconds.
Ended up 3rd.
Second race started out great, with a better qualifying position. the mustang with a transmission (Darrel Anderson) had to use his dads 425hp griggs II mustang on brand new sticker Hoosier A6s, so I knew we were going to have some fun. track was really greasy, so times were off a bit. (1:48.1). I got a great start and was in second for a few laps, going back and forth with the PTG style BMW, with the Mustang and RX7 behind. the faster RX7 TT got by as well as finally the BMW, (and Rylan in the blown S2000 and his new crank'ed engine, so it was the mustang and me for about 10laps. I had the power, he had the handling. braking was near the same.
The BAD: Last lap, no white flag or 1 finger given, so im still going hot, even though I have a 1 turn lead over Anderson in the mustang, after a great nose to tail battle for about 20min. (that was fun!), I come out of turn 8A (the "S"s at Sears) and there is the Honda that we have lapped 3 times already. I take the exit, see a point by with a closure rate of about 50mph, and just as im on his rear bumper, he loses his rear end and gets sideways and darts across the track. I try to turn right to avoid hitting him straight on, and hit his front right wheel and the impact is great. now we both are going to the wall, me at near 100mph. I see the wall coming up and the only thing I can think is, " I dont have my head restraint on and this is waay to fast to be hitting a wall at this angle" So, I clinch up for the impact like im trying to do a 500lb squat, and BOOM! its over quick. Thank god for the tires. Move the wall back a few feet . My head get wrenched forward. blurry vision, but i can move my head around. hands and toes working, so Im ok!! (thats part of the good news above) I jump out of the car to see the once beatuful Holbert car, completely destroyed! I felt like I was 8 and my puppy just got ran over by a car.
Totally senseless. The other guy is still in the car, a little more shaken up, but his car is a mess. He came over later appologse, and what could I say. All I could muster was, "Hey, things happen. Thats racing."
The Ugly: see below

Mark, DAMMIT! So glad you are OK, but so sad for your car.... I have seen some major damage repaired on a laser-guided frame machine, and since you have a full cage, it MAY be possible to save it- and you can add some more reinforcement while you're at. If not, Mark A's generous offer and the help of those of us here that can, should get you back on track....

That sounds very scary, and it's sad to lose the legendary Holbert car. But I'm so glad you didn't suffer any injuries! As Heinrich has said before: It gave its life to protect yours.
It would be much worse to lose the legendary Mark Kibort!

Mark
Glad to see you are feeling better today as your neck and back were hurting you yesterday. I would still get it looked at as this can be an on going problem.
This is a heart breaker as we were watching this from turn 2 and see Mark ahead of the Mustang for the checkers going through turn 8. It was a great race and expecting to see the finish and then go down and BS with Mark and Scott afterwards.
Then we see a cloud of dust and the Mustang goes by and then another car goes by and no Mark, then the dust settles and we can see two red cars into the tires. This is not good. The tow trucks pull up on scene right away and on the hook we see Marks car. We can see the front is crushed and know this is gonna be bad.
When we got to the cars it was worse than we thought. Standing behind the car and looking forward you can see the front of the car is bent/pointing to the right. Both rear quarters are hit and the passenger door is caved in all of the way. The passenger floor pan is buckled and it looked like the drivers floor is also bent. The only part of the car not hit and working is the drivers/Marks door. Someone was watching over Mark.
On a positive note below the passenger door the frame rail was not hit and looked straight as did the drivers side.
Paul who is a 928 gear head (not currently on the list) and who has worked for TRG ( The racers Group) and other various high performace teams, has seen as bad and worse get cut and repaired. His thoughts at the time was get it on a frame machine and get specs and start from there. I think this would be beneficial for two reasons.
1. This is the only way to know if it can be repaired and to what degree would it take to do the work for a race car.
2. If it cant be repaired it will give absolute closure to the Holbert car.
I also want to thank Mark for giving new life to the Holbert car. It could have ended it's life in a High school auto shop class and never been seen again. Mark has brought the Holbert car front and center once again when he started racing it. Just look at all of the events he has participated in along with the many write ups in cluding Excellence magazine.
I have enjoyed bringing my family to the track and not only seeing Mark race but Mark has always been very gracious to me and my family. I have enjoyed every minute of this and it would not have happened if the Holbert car was left to rot somewhere.
This is the unfortunate truth of racing but as Ferdinand Porsche said " Porsches were made to be driven"

Sorry to hear about the car and hope you haven't suffered any unseen injuries...
That being said, IMHO any car with 'legendary' status should never have been on a track in the first place. It was a record holder and in the history books and deserves to be in a museum. Restore it and put it behind velvet ropes where it belongs. It is an integral part of 928 history and needs to be regarded as such. Racing and abusing it would be like taking Stan's one of a kind Perlglanz to the track and destroying it too.
Want to race? Take a garden-variety common 928 and abuse it. You know enough about the Holbert car's technology to duplicate its performance... just don't trash another rarity -please.

Sucks about the car.

Glad you feel OK today, but please be _very_ proactive about any strange twinges or new body weirdness.

I hurt my neck two years ago in a crash going backwards into a tirewall developing 7.8G and the trouble didn't show up until a few months after the crash.
I suggest that you get some sort of written documentation of the accident and the forces your body went through. Just in case you need it in the future.
