I had a vibration around 1900 rpm and 50mph that was pretty noticeable, it came back around less noticeable around 65-70. I went through the search process here on the board and decided that it was probably the motor mounts. The engine was rock solid at idle, it never moved.
Well, I spent about 10 hours under the car this weekend and got the mounts changed out. Of course, I was using info from the members on this board; what a treasure rennlist members are!
The vibration is gone. The ride is really, really smooth now. (Now I can complain about wind noise at speed and rough idle when hot.)
One thing though, I'm finding that I spend as much time under the car as driving it!

I'm getting ready to do this job myself. Who's mounts did you use?

Mike,
Just as a reference point, and after reading pages on the forum here, Did mine about eight weeks ago, and I went with the solid rubber units from Roger. Comes with the required hardware, and the price is right! Unless you're a purist, the hydralics are IMHO just one more thing to wear out faster, and the general consensus seems to be that there is no disernable difference in vibration transmission to the passenger compartment. Tranny mounts are still available only from Porsche though. Roger also can source these at prices far below what I could through a dealer.

I bought the soild rubber mounts Carl sells. I'm assuming these are the same or close to what Roger sells? I try to spread the wealth amongst the vendors when I can.
So you like the performance of the solid ruber mounts then?

Solid is the way to go Mike.............many write ups on how to tackle the project and the 'x-member'.
I replaced mine some years ago but recently installed the silicone OPG which essentially follows all the MM replacement steps and found the combo of Dwayne, JP and Tony H sites to be invaluable.

Isn't that the craziest thing what changing a motor mount will do for your ride? I couldn't believe what a difference it made when I did the MMs on the Stepson. Made it quieter, made it smoother, made it better.
Things to do on the '89 and the '88!

Mike,
Totally happy with the solids. I did the trans at the same time and everything's smoothed out now. It's been too long since I drove one with good hydraulics in it, so I really can't make a comparison, but having said that, I really don't see how it could get much better.

I changed out my mounts with solid rubber versions when I pulled the engine earlier this summer. I honestly wish I would have left the old collapsed mounts in there. When you hit big bumps in the road (yeah Michigan) you can feel the powertrain moving now. It didn't use to do this and is pretty annoying.
Nothing wrong with the mounts, they just don't like our rough roads and 18" rims. If I had it to do over again I'd run Carl's solid engine and trans mounts.

Hey, you knocked the motor mount job off pretty quickly! It's one of my least favorite jobs. Did you do the pan gasket while you were in there? It's one of the more obvious WYAIT jobs on this car.

That, in fact, was one of the better clues that the mounts were collapsed. The engine should rock a bit on the mounts.

My 10 hours is the 10 I spent on the car; it doesn't count my numerous breaks!

Took me 20 hours total over 2 days but I cleaned everthing I could reach and checked the flex plate. Used Dwayne"s write up to get it done.
The mounts I removed were flat and had to be pryed out of the brackets. Used the solid Anchor mounts which raised the motor and now runs and drives like a new car.
