Default Might not be as bad as you think

Hey Mike,
Just as a reference point, as I don't know how well equipped you are, but with a proper hoist and air tools (actually didn't use the air as much as I thought I would), and a plan, my 15 year old son & I knocked them off in just under 8 hours with a break for lunch in there too.
Read all the material on here, and have labelled bags ready for the bits. Makes the reassembly go twice as fast when you're not hunting for the (*&%&$&*washer you knew you put down just over there.......
And, as usual, torque everything to spec with a proper wrench on the way back.
Good luck with it!

It was a dirty greasy job; mostly because the oil cooler was leaking on the driver's side (have one ordered) and had pretty much covered everything in oil just to the steering rack.
The oil cooler change will be a piece of cake compared to this job. Once I get it done, I'll jack her up and do a major cleanup.
My better half complained that I ruined some clothes during the "operation". I suggested just dropping it off at the Porsche dealer and let them do it. She just smiled.
One more thing, now it needs (another) alignment. Removing and reinstalling the steering rack changed something...

When I did the mounts in my 84' it needed an alignment afterwards. Made the mistake of taking it to a shop without a Hunter. Still had issues. Took it to a shop with a Hunter. Still wasn't right. Went to a new tire shop with a brand new Hunter and all is good. It really is nice the first time you drive the car with new mounts.

What in the world is a hunter?

Hunter is the brand of alignment machine. It has the software for a 928 and does not require the car to be lifted to align. I stayed with my car to make sure they didnt lift it.

It's even better after you replace the trans mounts ... they degrade too, probably at the same rate as the ones in front.

Motor mounts + Tranny mounts = Happy Trails!

I just had mine done. (New steering rack bushings, too.) The springy/slack sensation in the drivetrain is GONE. Nice and tight now.

My mech found OEM MM's through Porsche for cheaper than resellers...

You can get the parts from one of the sponsors, like 928sRUS or 928 International, go on top of the page where it says sponsors and you will find them there.

and yes change your motor mounts if they have not been changed yet.

I will be starting my MM/OPG job this weekend. I guess I am a firm believer in the WYAIT, because I think you might as well change out the rack mounts while you have it down. Also seems like a good time to replace any worn rack boots, tie rods, ball joints, shocks, oil cooler lines, and then get a new alignment.
I am glad it is a long weekend.

Solid rubber is the way to go. Long before I knew anything about MM's I put Anchor hydraulic on my GTS and when I checked the hook points a couple of weeks ago they were very close to full collapse. Thats after 5 years and 15k miles. I hate doing MM's.
The reason I do not use Anchor is that they do not seem to offer solid or hydraulic. Its a crap shoot on what you receive. One quick way to tell is shake them - if they slosh they are hydraulic. Filled with water and a small amount of antifreeze. They leak and collapse - see pictures.
I use another supplier who has seperate part numbers for solid and hydraulic.
I may fit some Volvo hydraulic MM's to the GTS to see if they last just for grins.
There is no discernable difference between solid and hydraulic in the feel. So why use hydraulic when they are known to collapse and fail.
Just my $.05C.
