A 944 is 1/2 the engine and 1/2 the car of a 928.

IIRC it was determined sometime ago that the ONLY non-interference 928 motors were the low-compression 4.5L motors ( essentially the 8.5:1 motors and maybe the 9.0:1 motors.) Any of the higher-ratio motors are interference motors, would eat valves and even the 9.0 motors will eat valves with enough carbon buildup.
The 10.4:1 Euro 16v motors are definitely interference motors.

Maybe that's the "carbon buildup" compression threshold and the <= 9.0:1 motors are OK even when caked with crud. I don't remember.
But, the main point is that not ALL 16v motors can spin a belt and survive.
Any 4.7 guys have any experience? lol

well, I would definantly say in any event anything is possible anyway and the same caution should be shown to all these motors, although any 944 should also make sure they get changed.
Having had a bunch of 944s and 928s one thing I can say for sure is that you get what was originally paid for. It is obvious the 944 was a cheaper car when you drive it and put miles on it compared to the 928. But really its what your doing with the car and what you want. I like the 928 better, but the 944 got me back and forth on long comutes for a long time with a lower gas bill. Its hard to say the 944 is a better car because its not. Its really only the 951 guys that say anything anyway because they can spend a little bit to make a bit of power....
928 is supossed to be an electrical gremlin, but in the 3 Ive owned (and all older ones) im not chasing anything more electric passed regular stuff or even that matches the 944 stuff. Its really more of a preference and thats okay, go drive one and see if you wanna come over to the dark side

Out-of-the-box? My personal pet opinion? Because the factory under-tired it on the front to make sure it couldn't castrate 911s on a track. If you do a little math it is easy to see that a stock 928 is under-tired for its weight as compared to a stock 911 or anything more-modern with a similar weight and architecture (like a C5 or C6 corvette.)

Coilovers aren't everything. it's suspension design and geometry that determines a cars handicap. i know a lot of ricer guys think they can just "throw" some coilovers on their honda and it will handle like a ferrari. not.
