Default Steering issue with my newly acquired 928

I bought another 928 on eBay. It was a no reserve auction. I put in a low-ball bid, and could not believe I actually won.

Today, the car was delivered. It is silver, with phone dials, has a unique body kit. Manufacturing date is July of 1979. VIN is 07266. I guess that makes it a 1980 model.

It runs and drives, but there is an issue with the steering:

If I steer the car to the right, everything is fine.

But if I steer to the left, all I hear is a faint "beep" or "whine", and it keeps going straight.

I already scratched the front bumper cover because it did not go where I tried to steer it to.

You mean the steering wheel won't physically go any further, or the steering wheel turns and the car doesn't?

I don't think you should drive it until its had a safety check on a lift, too many nasty possibilities.

Previous owner loved NASCAR and the car is in recovery

Rack valve is stuck or the combination of steering column is fowled at the extension knuckles.

Worst case the car has be bounce or jumped like mine and you have up to 1" uniform frame bending in the upward direction.

$400 to straighten, new rack + pump + hoses, 4 steering columns, steering knuckle, that resulted in a very light wallet!

Sounds like you should have bought a later model Nicole - from what I remember, later models got independent controls for both left/right and forward/backward, and the last years they also got radio!

I had an early model in my youth.. a remote "clicker" controlled silver 928 I could also control with claps.

Click once and it'd reverse to the right (had a small J inset with a little wheel in it underneath to provide the turn in reverse). Click again it'd go forward in a straight line.

Congratulations Nicole Herestarts your journey of greasy fingernails and such!! ,,, Ao anyway, sounds like you should check power steering fluid. And the only thing it really can be, is a rack issue. And I KNOW you love those!!
