Thumbs up Changed front shocks on my 1990 S4!

Just thought I will let you guys know that changing the front shocks is as big a challenge as you said it would be.
The left side, done first, took me 5 hours to complete. The right side took 3 hours.
One thing that sped up the passenger side was cutting the length of the bolts on the spring compressors. I took about 1.5 inches off the length and they fit much better around the springs and were out of the way of the upper control arm. I'll keep these for sure.
Anyway, I couldn't have done it without all of the information available in the archives here.

The rears are next weekend hopefully.
Thanks,
Dan

Can you point to a specific thread that has a write-up on how to do this? I bought a set of new shocks from Roger and it is something I'm going to have to do one of these months.

TIA.

Make sure the spring compressors used are of best quality possible; the front springs are very strong.

Stephen-

Depending on which 'month' you're thinking about, we might be able to turn it into a party and help out. It can be done solo, but there are a few steps that are easier with 2 pairs of hands, and air tools are hugely helpful.

Hey Rob,

That sounds good to me! I want to liase with Dr. Bob one of these days and work out a "to-do" list for Sharky and I don't know where the shocks will fit into this. I want to start with really simple things like changing the oil and transmission fluid, etc., etc. so I can start to get myself oriented to the car. I know Dr. Bob has a new set of shocks also, so my original plan was to "help" when he did his and have that experience under my belt before attempting mine. If we had a "party" to do Sharky's shocks in the near future, I'm afraid I'd just be standing around and handing people wrenches!! So I should get a little more proficient before asking for others' help. That said, it sounds like a great idea when the time is right. Thanks for bringing it up. And if anyone else has this job to do before I'm ready, I'll be there!

Stephen-

Well, if YOU'VE got shocks to do, and DR BOB's got shocks to do, and I'VE got shocks to do, we've just crossed the threshold of it not being totally insane for me to pick up one of these:

I love it when a plan comes together.....

It was for 10 miles or so then I blew out the PS pump seals after forgetting to install all the pump bolts

The $20 repair kit is on its way, will be up and running this weekend.

Rob-

I'm in for a share of that spring tool if you want to get it. I suspect that Stephen is good for another share. I have the alignment lasers if we need them. New shocks are here at the house ready, after the long drive from Texas on Monday. I feel a clinic day here sometime in the next month.

Hey! Not fair!
You have to crawl around on the ground, get filthy and use the cheap spring compressors!
By the way, the rears are done and I'm fiddling with the ride height this evening.
An alignment is obviously in the very near future too!
You guys have fun, 928 owners are a rarity in Mississippi.
