I'll bite...why would you need something other than the original seal?

Greg, I'm looking for something to use in a hurry. I might not have time to get a new seal where I'm located, but I do have access to auto parts stores. I heard that the cap threads ares the same as some lawn mower caps.

Darien--

I can grab a real cap and seal at the local 928 parts emporium if needed, and bring it with. Or call Tom at 928 Int'l or Rpoger and have them hurry-ship it to you. You'll get it Tuesday, in plenty of time to install before the run to Arlington on Thursday..

BUMP...Looking for folks that have used a seal other than the OEM...anyone?

I know it's not the preferred replacement part, but will standard gasket material work?

Just spoke to Steve Cattaneo and he said anything rubber having the approx the same thickness will work (i.e., tire innertube, etc.)

Innertube is a terrible option, because the rubber lasts a very short time and naturally deteriorates (at least for bicycles this is the case). So I recommend something that can handle ATF.

Yup...I think he mentioned the innertube as a quick/short fix.

I'll ping the local auto parts stores for rubber gasket material and cut a new seal.

Darien--

The local parts places like Pep Boys here have a 'HELP!' section that includes some somewhat universal cap seals. For instance, I found a generic cap seal for a brake MC cap there that works fine for my little bleeder adapter. That one is the same size as the one for the ATF reservoir. You can measure the cap and measure the seals to get the right one, or just carry the old cap to the store with you and eyeball it next to the part to see if it will work. The soft cap seal will give you a better fluid seal with less torque on the cap threads, relative to most common gasket materials. This isn't rocket surgery, but is kind of critical only because a gasket or cap failure shows up as transmission shift problems only after fluid level drops below a critical level. So damage is done before you even notice the symptoms.

I bought a sheet of flexible gasket material that is resistant to oil, gas, etc. and cut one.

I used a cold patch used to patch the inside of tubeless tires, cut it to fit, worked great no leaks.

When you guys made your cut out, did you make it a solid ring or did you cut the center out like the OEM? I'm not sure why the center section would need to be open?

I had the cap in stock but not the seal. Seal is a Porsche part and comes from Germany.
The seal is $14 which is daylight robbery in my book.
We need to find an alternative.
