It's true that Amsoil may not have had a chance to do anything preventative. We're a little surpised because the damage looks like it has been there a while and this motor had a rebuild not very long ago after a failure that did involve a loss of oil, now that you mention it.

Sorry, I'm asking specifically a 928 or 944 cam.
I'm not disagreeing, but looking at the frequency of other problems like water pumps and rod bearings, if this were really a big deal where are the failures? I'm willing to bet a very large number of 928's on the road are using the new low zinc oil.
High Zinc oil is easy to find and not more expensive, so I do look for it. Just asking an open question.

The government figured that they couldn't get the old cars off the road from smog laws...so they'd just kill all the engines! That will get rid of most of them!

Is it a GT? Had this issue on mine when I went through the motor, slight pitting on the noses/backside of lobes. IIRC, seems more common on GT's due to cams and no change to valve springs (i.e. S4 springs).

I use Schaeffer oils at work and also in my 928. They make a great moly synthetic oil IMHO.
I was turned onto it by an old drag racer buddy I used to hang out with. We had a generator that we would run all day at the strip to power our trailer and battery charger. That thing would always run out of gas towards the end of the day. Once we started using the schaeffer moly synthetic oil, it would run the whole day. We're only talking about a difference of about 30 min. in a full day but still. Thats pretty cool.

I was running Royal Purple the past few year. $12 a quart......now I'm using VR1.
I've been doing some research on Brad Penn, I know a few drag guys that swear by it (900+hp from a Chevy motor is kind of demanding....).

I wanted to try the Schaeffer gear lube in my transaxle but couldn't find anyone willing to split on a 5 gallon pail. At the time that was the smallest container they would sell.

I used it on 2 6000 mile drain intervals on my 94 Formula with the LT1. The UOA results were fantastic, significantly better than average, in fact I may even have the results around somewhere. I used the 15w 40 and the 10w 30 supreme 7000 blend, its green oil.

Going to resurrect this thread. Schaeffer does not formulate their oils. I bought a 5 gallon pail of Schaeffer 741 gear oil for use in my tow vehicle and in our Audi Quattro. In the tow vehicle I started getting a loud whining noise from the rear differential when turning.
I bought this oil because I thought it was the best on the market. I read the detail reports carefully along with the MSDS on it. Expensive and thought I had hit on something that was really good. It is supposed to be for LS Synthetic Diffs requiring 75W-90.
Contacted Schaeffer about the noise and heard from their Southwestern Regional Director who told me that I should not be using this stuff in my differential.
He is making an incident report and sending it to technical. I am told that company policy is that they have 30 days to respond.
I pulled the oil yesterday and it was now black and had metal sheen floating through it after only 2500 miles. I replaced it with some Kendall LS that I had on hand just to see if there was a difference. The whining noise on turns is gone. Will be replacing it with Red Line 57904.
Forewarned is forearmed. Is Schaeffer a stand up company? Will let you know the outcome. Here is a link to the product: http://www.schaefferoil.com/eaton-synthetic-lubes.html
I am done with Schaeffer Oils. They have someone else making it for them and it appears that they don't move very quickly to resolve issues. All this makes quality control suspect to me.
As far as oil goes, I am sticking with SWEPCO in my engines and transmissions. I tried the Kendall and went through a set of synchros in my 915 in 3 events. After the last redo in the 911 I drained the oil after 3 events and it was as clear as when I installed it.
SWEPCO has a great policy. Buy $500 worth and they will ship it to you free. Group buys make it really easy.
