Is it loose where it mounts to the glass, where the stem meets the body of the mirror or at the day/night adjuster? You can fix the former, as described here:
http://www.nichols.nu/tip087.htm
but the latter two seem to require replacement. My day/night adjuster just went limp and allows the mirror to flop around. I can't see how to get the mirror open without destroying it.

Where the stem meets the body... unfortunately. I'm wondering if I could wrap a rubber
band around the stem and slide it down there, I might try that.

I've turned the bass down and that usually helps

Replace it, thats what I did and it worked. Start with the piece that glues to the windshield and if that doesn't fix it then order a new mirror.

Yeah... I think replacement might be the best way to go.

If I go aftermarket, is there a way to get the piece off the windshield? I think
I saw some kinda adhesive remover once.

That's where I'm headed with mine. It just got floppy last night. About $80 new or $30 used for the stock mirror.

If you want to go "aftermarket", that button is usually removed by heating to soften the glue and twisting with pliers until it pops off. Don't use too much heat or you could crack the glass. I haven't done that before and plan to just go with stock, and a used one should be fine.

I think I'm too afraid a used one will just have the same problem...

I'll try and remember to report back with my solution other than the $80 or used.

I took mine off and put a dab of calk in there... problem solved. I'm not going to bang on my unobtanium bronze-tint windshield for ANY reason.

I just went out and yanked it. I was wrong...luckily,
it was just the loose metal clips on the windshield. Gave them a tweak
and it's solid.

Thanks for the tips, it's nice to go at a project knowing what you're up
against. It's really nice when fixing anything on my 928 is actually
easy... (and cheap)!

Well I was cleaning my front windshield yesterday and BAM.......mine falls in my lap! So went to the auto store and a few mins later she was back up and fine. This freakin humidity and heat makes it easy for them to fall off atleast in TN. Mine moved around when I first got the car, but didnt think it was ready to fall off, now its on and fine with no problems.

Dave: Just where did you put the caulk? My mirror has something broken internally so when I move the day/night switch, the mirror just flops around on the stalk. Anyway, I ordered a used one last night from 928 Intl.

Bill, I just put it in the plastic piece that engages with the metal windshield piece. That was where I was getting movement, though if the car is parked too long in the sun the glass rattles a bit in the housing -- the rattle goes away once it cools a bit.

No quick fix for your problem IMHO, unless you can disassemble the mechanism without breaking something. The way it snaps together, I didn't think the problem was serious enough to warrant the risk. Maybe when you get your replacement you can do some exploratory surgery on the old unit...

Bill - before installing the new one, get a gloss black paint pen, the kind with the felt marker tip, and paint over the entire back plastic of the housing. This will help prevent the housing from getting sun dried.

Replaced two due to the beating of the sun (around the wiindow blocker) on the back of the mirror. Seems to not only dry out the plastic, but the dry plastic loosens the bottom hold capability and eventually it starts to jitter. One broke the dim lever as well.
