Default Looking for a non-sunroof roof panel.

Well, since my windshield got broken last week seems like the time to try and source this panel. If anyone has one they would like to part with please shoot me a PM or post here. I need more headroom to clear a helmet.

Thanks,
John

John:

As an FYI, the panel new from Porsche is around $340, plus $30 in expedited (safer) shipping.

I would think that installing a clean, new panel would be cheaper than the needed cleaning up on a removed piece.

FWIW, I am doing this same mod to my "hot rod" GTS...

I have a no-sunroof interior panel in good shape .. black. It has light knife-edge damage on the leading edge from an unscrupulous windshield remover. I will sell it for $200 plus shipping.

Sorry this is OT, but are non-sunroof interior roof panels available for those interested in the swap?

Just a quick side question: I am six feet tall (183cm) and find the headroom in my 91 S4 to be really close. To the point I need to recline the seat some in order to comfortably drive the car without banging my head on the roof. Is this normal, or is there a special way to adjust the seat for more clearance? At six foot, I don't consider myself unusally tall. Is this why people do the sunroof delete?

How much additional headroom do you gain by replacing the sunroof top with the non-sunroof top? Are there technical reasons one would not do the sunroof delete?

I am in the process of having my car prepped for paint and have already grafted on GTS rear quart panels, fixing the low head clearance now would make sense. Especially if the cost of the solid roof panel is low (compared to the GTS quarter panels).

Thanks for all advice

Dan:

I've heard it's about 1 1/4 inches... at least I hope so.

For me, it's the difference between allowing a helmet vs. not at my preferred driving position, even with lowered seats !

btw, beautiful car !!!

Max head room can be achieved by a combination of the seat back recline angle, lowering the rear of the bottom cushion to its lowest position, and raising the front of the bottom cushion as high as is comfortable.

This will put your butt at the lowest possible location. Kind of like sitting in a hole. The trick is to find some combination of this set up that is comfortable.

At 6'6" this has been vexing me for some time. If I setup the seat as above, and recline the seat so my hair is just brushing the roof, I have to stretch to reach the wheel, shifter, stereo controls, etc. It's very uncomfortable. I also bought a dished steering wheel to bring the steering wheel closer to me, using the stock one was not going to work. The dished wheel helped greatly, but did not solve the problem.

As an experiment, I fitted a fixed back race seat knowing that it would lower the seat and the difference was night and day. Plenty of leg room, I could sit upright at a comfortable angle, and best of all, I could comfortably reach all of the controls.

My next step will be to buy a reclining "sport" seat like a Recaro or Corbeau as they generally mount lower then the standard 928 seats. It will give additional head room while still allowing some measure of adjustment.

My ultimate 928 will definitely be sunroof delete whether I have to convert mine, or I find a 32v that way.

Here's a good thread covering options for tall drivers:

Thanks Jim. It really is a beautiful color and when finished, I hope, the car will be distinctive in terms of color, added/deleted options, new interior and some mechanical massaging.

I decided to read through the results of search "sunroof delete" and there were a few threads that indicated 2.75 inches can be reclaimed by removing the sunroof. I'll be happy with the 1.25 you quote, ecstatic if it turns out to be 2.75. I have a long torso but short legs, relatively, so gaining any additional headroom will be good. I can't stand the seat reclined back too much (feet don't reach the pedals) or with the seat lowered too much in the rear. I want a car that I fit in without conflict. I don't know how the 5'14"+ folks drive these sunroofed cars.

I am seriously considering the sunroof delete right now before we get too far into the paint prep. Any specific thoughts on where is the best place(s) to cut and weld?

Thanks

Dan:

I too have long torso, short legs... stubby might be a better description. If we get 2.75 from removal of the sunroof, that's unbelievable, but cool.

I got about 3/4 of an inch by going to Recaro SRD seats with low rails. If the roof gains me another 1.25, that would make 2" over stock.

I am not sure what your shop would quote you for the roof panel work since you are already doing rear quarters. My body guy estimated about 6-8 hours for the roof panel if I remove all the interior pieces and only want the panel / seems primered in prep for the complete re-paint.
