I have spoken with many people who have dealt with him, particularly in selling him parts, who speak well of him and have experienced no issues; however, he is wanted on arrest warrants in a dozen states, has more than a dozen judgments against him in more than a dozen states, has used numerous alias' here in California and in more than a dozen states....get the picture? I supposed one has to base one's opinion on their own experiences; if you have had a bad experience mechanically with Markus' work, I would be surprised - but if you had a bad "business experience" with Markus, join the crowd. His shop in Santa Monica was notoriously slow (it could take months to get your 928 back) and I understand the frustration when you would go to the shop and see your baby just sitting outside not being worked on weeks after you dropped it off...I "cured" that problem by committing the entire day and staying at the shop making sure the work was done right then and there and knowing why it wasn't (if, for example, a part needed to be ordered, or was back-ordered...) - with Markus, you definitely need to be pro-active and with Jules you don't (or with the shop in
Anaheim)...but I have never seen anyone better at diagnosing 928 issues; fixing complicated or complex 928 issues or who cares more about 928 automobiles than Markus. I cannot say that all my experiences with him have been perfect and I have known him a long time (since I bought my first (of now 4) 928's - on balance, I would never hesitate to take my car to him if I had an issue with it, or it needed repairs - but I would never just leave my car with him - even today - enough said on that subject. You go with what you know and with what and how you have experienced - the important issue is to find someone you trust to do the work you don't feel you can do on your own. Making a mistake working on a 928 can be very expensive (heck, just getting anything fixed on a 928 can be very expensive)...
I've also never had any issues with Markus. Everytime we have communicated, it has been very pleasant and very professional. Seems like a great guy, to me.

The "stories" that come from his "old" customers are amazing!!!! However, in all fairness, I'm sure that people have stories about me, too. I don't pay much attention to the gossip. I try to deal with reality.

The reality of the 928 world is that it is extremely difficult to "plan" ahead and figure out how much time to allow to repair a vehicle. Customers schedule a problem with one thing...and then show up with a 3 page list of "other" things that have been problems for year, that no one has been able to solve. Or a 3 page list of "minor" other problems they would like looked at. And once a 20 year old, neglected vehicle is inspected, that list always seems to grow, even further. A car scheduled for a 2-3 hour initial job, can suddenly need 20-30 hours of work. Try and figure out how to schedule for that! Now get 3-4 of these, every week and you can suddenly be "months" behind...especially if the guy that really knows the cars (like Markus), is the guy that does the work (like me)...which is what you want!

Try to remember that these are complex cars, that tend to have been somewhat neglected, over the years. They also, frequently, have been in the hands of people that should not have touched them! Add in the "parts" issues, with nothing being in stock in the US (from Porsche) and you frequently have a nightmare. I think that the "schedule an appointment, take the car in, and get it back by "5" or "5:30" (at the worse case) days are over for the 928s.

Working on and solving issues, with these cars, takes time and patience. If these cars were easy to fix, they wouldn't have those "lists" of things that no one has been able to solve, over the years.

These cars are ALL of the age that the moment you touch one thing......something else breaks more often than not. Add in that some of the broken parts are NLA and having one as a daily driver (must get you to work) is some what optimistic. In college I drove a really, really old car, a 1947 Plymouth it was 20 years old at the time....so was I !

OK. Don't have a 928 yet...haven't crossed that line, but I'm close to it. If anyone wants to talk me off the ledge....

If I can make it I'll be in an '88 924S--the grey one that needs a paint job.
